Here's what was given to us...

From the Theatrical Edition - http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...theatrical.jpg

Here's what we should have been given...

From the Extended Edition - http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...r-extended.png

They will love to hear from you! A letter from Joe Six Pack professing their love for a mediocre disc is a movie studio's wet dream!

I tend to agree. I have the US version, BTW (I know you're joking, though ). I know the image is digitized and washed out, but it's, by no means, as bad as Gangs of New York. In fact, it's extremely detailed, IMO. I only watched about half of it last night, but I was very happy with it.

So the entire extended scenes are in a good PQ, as opposed to just the extended parts of the scene? That makes me feel a little bit better.

while i haven't seen nor bought the movie, but, i do find it interesting that on the second day after it's been released for sale, this blu-ray site has still not reviewed it. braveheart has already been reviewed by this site. is this one of those things that makes ya go, "Hmmm?!?"

Agreed. Nothing wrong with this release.

There has already been a great deal of discussion about this...
see this thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=112665

The Gladiator review will be up today. The reviewer had to go out and pay for the titles himself because screeners were never sent.

So if Paramount re-issues this title and the entire film looks the same as the Extended Edition scenes you're not trading in I take it?

Out of curiosity, how often does this happen, and does it usually happen only with disappointing transfers like this one?

I don't really know much about what they did there, but I watched the movie and didnt see any scenes that had the quality of that second screen..

I do know that you can easily go through the movie saying its ok and looks fine because you get used to it, but damn, that second pic reminds me of what I was actually waiting for... and never got.

Everyone thinks it is weird that no screeners were sent for either movie, especially because they were such major releases. Hopefully we'll have an answer about it soon, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Paramount is not gonna reissue nothing. This release is just fine. I wish that some of you PQ guru's can come over to my crib (I'll supply the brewskies) and try to show me what it wrong with this flick.
The past two weeks, I had to listen to you guys moan about the weak transfer and the possibility of myself being dissapointed in a movie that is so close to my heart. Then I get the nerve to sit down and watch it...turned out to be a positive experience.

I have not seen this myself yet so these comments are not 100% guaranteed but from everything i've read....

The release is not a disaster as described by some. It is not a very good release PQ-wise and could have been much better. The majority of people will think it looks reasonably good and be happy. They could certainly make it much better and maybe they will re-master it again someday to do that.

If someone sits at the proper viewing distance and have everything setup correctly they will likely notice the DNR and EE. It is personal taste whether this will bother these people a lot or not. Personally it does bother me in some cases and I usually end up sitting farther back if the DNR is really bad. I do this with Dark City, Patton, and some others. I still enjoy watching these Blu-rays but it just isn't quite the same experience as others which have better PQ.

So overall it seems the PQ is likely in the bottom 1/3 of all Blu-ray releases for PQ but still the best version of this movie out there to buy for home use.

With the pricing available out there it's hard to understand why most fans of this movie would not buy the Blu-ray version since it's the best there is available of this movie today. If money is tight and you already own the DVD then maybe that's a good reason. If you're going to not buy it to try to send a message to the studio I really think you're making a mistake as far as it making a difference. This Blu-ray will sell well and the miniscule percentage of people who reject it will be a blip on the radar.

I'm all for a re-release with much better PQ and I will buy that as well for sure but until then i'm anxiously awaiting receiving my copy in the mail.

This. For all the whining I saw on here, when the movie is in motion, I actually thought it looked quite good. And the audio was even better.

Not getting screeners sent happens all the time from my understanding. There are tons of reasons why this happens and it differs from case to case. I'm sure in some cases is truly is due to low quality of the release but I suspect that the vast majority of the time it's other reasons.

It just seems especially odd with these titles since they were such major releases....whatever

That must be the case because I only watched the extended, and thought it looked great. I'll have to try the theatrical version tonight to see how they compare.

I want Martin Liebman to review the disc. Patton is one of the best Blu's out there and Gladiator looks almost as good.
