I like that a lot but again, he would stand out. But if given enough makeup...maybe...just maybe.

With a big beard, floppy hat, and clothing, you could disguise The Rock to a fair degree; he definitely has the body type and temperament for the part. Same for Thorin and the required dwarf make-up. Not many people would have recognized Jon Rhys Davies as Gimli. Whoever plays him has to be old, arrogant, and convincingly grumpy.

Unfortunately he is all but retired now. Very little chance of seeing him in a movie I think

That's OK with me, because the fans end up being the winners, and if "Hobbit" makes enough, maybe there will be more Middle Earth stories destined for the big screen. I also like the idea of 2 movies, with more details given, a sort of prequel to LOTR. Like you said, it might give us more Middle-Earth movies later on as well.

Lord of the Rings Gandalf

After false starts, lawsuits, hype and drama, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro’s cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythic classic The Hobbit finally starts filming this July in New Zealand.

According to Sir Ian McKellen, who returns as the masterful wizard Gandalf, casting has commenced and is taking place in Los Angeles, New York and London.

“The script too proceeds,” McKellen wrote on his official site. “The first draft is crammed with old and new friends, again on a quest in Middle Earth. The director Guillermo del Toro is now living in Wellington, close to the Jacksons’ and the studio in Miramar.”

It seems all that is left to decide is who’s going to step into Bilbo Baggins’ furry feet. We asked for your input last year, and you settled on actors as different as Simon Pegg, Paul Giamatti and Emile Hirsch.

So let’s open up the floor once again in this new year. Drop your dreamcasting selections for Jackson and del Toro’s possible Hobbit duology in the comments section below. From Bilbo to Smaug and beyond into comparatively esoteric characters, there are plenty of major and minor roles to fill. And the road goes ever on and on until 2012, when the film is tentatively scheduled to premiere.

Man, so many awesome movies are being filmed this year and this summer specifically! Really looking forward to this; The Hobbit was a great book and Guillermo Del Toro is awesome.

Great news. I was getting a bit worried after all the delay and the rumor it could possibly be canceled. I wonder who they cast as Bilbo? Hopefully more news starts to trickle out in the coming months.
