To maintain continuity with the LoTR films, I imagine they would try to find someone with a similar voice and about as tall. Judicious use of make-up might help with the rest of the differences.

I don't see why Saruman has to be in this pre-quel anyway but I haven't read this book since the early 90s so what do I know? I do know I'll read the novel again before either movie comes out.

He doesn't have to be in the Hobbit because he is not identified by name in the book. However, while Bilbo and the dwarves trek through Mirkwood. Gandalf attends a meeting of the White Council, of which Saruman is the chief Wizard, to discuss what is to be done to Sauron (also not mentioned by name, although he is implied as master of The Ring when Bilbo finds it), who is causing mischief at Dol Guldur (located in southern Mirkwood near Lothlorien). In an extended two-movie version of the book, I can't imagine those scenes not being included. Also, when Saruman returns to Isengard (during the time period around which the Hobbit occurs), he looks into the Palantir and becomes Sauron's servant and a traitor to the council. This is a huge event in the scheme of things for Middle Earth; again, I have a hard time imagining the movie without this scene.

No offense but that's a terrible idea. Mcfadyen would a hell of a Thorin though.

How about Angus Young from AC/DC?

Del Toro, in an interview with BBC radio: Thorin's father Thráin II will also be featured.

Interesting: if true, this suggests a scene not explicitly detailed in the book, where Gandalf obtains the map and key to the hidden door on The Lonely Mountain from Thrain, shortly before he dies in Sauron's dungeon in Dol Guldur.

They might as well put in the scene where Gandalf and Thorin first meet. I believe it happened in Bree.

heheh i like how you put this. all i can picture is an 8 year old sauron who is egging carts or something

I can just hear Sauron's mother now: "Sauron! What were you doing!?"

"Awww geee mom... nothing is all! I just found a ring and Gandalf and I were-"

"Gandalf!?!? How many times have I told you to stay away from him!"

It won't be quite the same without Christopher Lee as Sauron. I trust Del Toro though; he knows what he's doing...

Why would sauroman be in The hobbit movie??!!He wasn't in the book. . . .

Also:The name they (or Gandalf) refer to sauron in The hobbit is the necromancer.

Have high hopes for this movie

PS: Didn't read your previous post from the one I replied to.But why put things into the movie which isn't in the book? And why those things you listed?Found the book to be a different beast from LOTR,so hopefully they will give it a different feel from LOTR.

To make it into two movies, they may want to expand on some of the material. Gandalf mentions the White Council driving the Necromancer from Mirkwood. Saruman was head of the council. Lady Galadriel was also on that council so she could be in the movie as well.

I just watched Hellboy 2 over the weekend and with all the different creatures in that movie, I couldn't help but to think how awesome he's going to make The Hobbit look, espeically since he said (in an interview) that he plans to stick with more anamatronic-type characters instead of CGI.

There are characters that are not mentioned, but implied in the book. Originally merely a children's story, Tolkien issued a revised edition and opened the door to provide links to the rest of the Lord of the Rings/Middle Earth drama. A two-part, potentially six-hour (plus?) movie would allow the other threads operating in Middle Earth to be included. Saruman, as the chief Wizard of the White Council is almost certain to be included, as would his becoming a traitor by looking into the palantir of Orthanc and becoming ensnared by Sauron. Sauron's escape from Dol Guldur to Mordor, empowering and activating the Ringwraiths, is another highly probable subplot. It is also at this time that Aragorn begins his labors that will eventually lead to his kingship, betrothal to Arwen, etc. Also, shortly after Bilbo returns to the Shire, Balin and a colony of Dwarves travel to Moria to search for mithril and disturb the Balrog. Gollum (his inclusion is certain) begins his search for the Ring, etc. With six hours, you can include alot of material not specifically covered in the 300 page book.

This is what I am hoping for most of all.

You know what...maybe they could make that a whole seperate movie unto itself.

There hasn't been much talk of Bilbo Baggins casting lately, but an actor I think would be an excellent choice would be Ben Whishaw. A very talented actor who isn't 'too famous.' Any rumors as to when more casting announcements are expected? Summer?

Not sure if I'm looking forward to a 6 hour epos. . . .Are they gonna split it into two movies? Why not just make it a seperate movie instead of a (potentially pretentious) prelude to LOTR.Have a feeling Jackson will have a strong-hand producer role on this one Always thought his early work was funny as hell, and was thrilled when I heard he was going to direct LOTR back in the days. But IMO he screwed that up as he has done with king kong. Not an actors director unfortunately.

The adventure will be split into two movies most likely because of the success of Lord of the Rings - spread out the story and both movies are bound to be big money makers. That's OK with me, because the fans end up being the winners, and if "Hobbit" makes enough, maybe there will be more Middle Earth stories destined for the big screen. One can only speculate on what additional material will be covered that is not specifically in The Hobbit, but that adds an additional degree of excitment. Making all of the material part of "The Hobbit" instead of "The Hobbit" plus "A Movie that Deals With Events in the Years Between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings" would be a safety factor to ensure maximum ticket sales (i.e. "The Hobbit" as a book is almost as popular as LoTR). In either case, the Hobbit movie is almost certain to be darker in tone and "more adult" than the book
