Casting News for THE HOBBIT

by Peter Jackson on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 4:06pm

Some more HOBBIT casting news today. As we near the end of our first shooting block (we have a break in less than three weeks to get some editing and visual effects work done, plus prepare for very big scenes coming up), we are looking at characters featuring in sequences that take place a little later in the story.

We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown. I've known Stephen for several years, and we're developing a DAMBUSTERS movie together. In addition to his writing skills, he's a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.

The Master's conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage. Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part.

Last, and certainly not least, is Conan Stevens, who will be playing an Orc called Azog (Orcs are never called Roger or Dennis for some strange reason). And yes that's his name—Conan! Isn't that cool? Azog is played by Conan! Here's a photo of Conan and I together... I'm pretty tall, probably at least 6'5" or 6'6" I would guess, so that gives you some clue how tall Conan is! You can learn all about him at www.conanstevens.com.

Conan Stevens

Got a busy day's shooting ahead, so I'm about to jump in the car—but look out for the beginning of the 20 questions answers very soon. Thanks for the questions, many are very insightful. I've been through all of them and have a list ready to go.

Cheers,

Peter J

Well, I guess that answers the question as to whether Moria will be involved as a location.

PJ is 6'6"???!?!? I always envisioned him as just a short fat (yes, he is skinny, now...) man.

Life is easy when you're tall. You can grow up to be in the NBA or be an Orc. LOL

That is great news.Think he'll play that part to perfection.Too bad that will probably be in the second movie, but who knows with the revised script

To be fair, it was part my fault since I argued heavily with them.

I like the books a lot (LOTR anyway, not a big fan of The Hobbit book). But I'm pretty liberal when it comes to being ok with film adaptations making major changes as I pretty much look at the books and the movie adaptations as being largely separate entities. Some changes are improvements, some are negative, but I enjoy seeing directors put their spin on a story nonetheless!
And you were one of the ones "ranting" on the other side. So I would hope no one would get YOU started again.

Since orcs are called goblins in The Hobbit, could it be that PJ is just using the term "orc" to avoid confusion? If so, it could refer to the goblins that attacked the dwarves in the Misty Mountains. Unless you are going by the name Azog. PJ might use that for a name of the Misty Mountain orcs.

That has been a source of confusion. When The Hobbit was written, Tolkien was still playing around with names (apparently one of his past-times, as you are aware from reading the 'Histories') as is evident from Gandalf's conversation with Bilbo about the mountains north of Mirkwood being "stiff with goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs of every kind". The Scandanavian legends, from which many of his creatures are derived, distinguish between these creatures as being of different races or at least sizes. It appears to me that in LotR he seems to have combined all of them under the classification of "orc". Azog, who is referred to as a "goblin" in the Hobbit (but was with little doubt an "orc"), lived in Moria and killed Thorin's grandfather Thror upon his return to Khazad-dum, and was in turn killed by Dain at the Battle of Azanulbizar. Of course, it is also possible that Jackson is just using Azog as a generic name for an orc, similar to his version of "Fatty Bolger" in Fellowship of the Ring.

I acknowledged that in my post.

In any case, I won't get started again. You bookworms start *****ing about changes again and you're going straight on the ignore list as I'm only interested in discussing the film with fans of Jackson's movies.

And don't forget that in Jackson's FotR movie, Legolas exclaims "Goblins!" when they find signs of battle inside the 'West Gate'.

Now from when I read the books, I always assumed that 'Goblins' referred to a much smaller, weaker version of these creatures while the next stage were 'regular Orcs', and then the final stage would be the 'Uruk-hai' variety of them.

From the books and the notes provided by Douglas Anderson in The Annotated Hobbit, that seems to be a reasonable hierarchy (from small to large): hobgoblins, goblins, orcs, Uruks. Of course, the word "uruk" is somewhat redundant, as it is a derivation of "orc".

Well then if you look at your recent posts, you might note that you are being incendiary with your comments about us. Maybe you will end up on an ignore list as well. Your inflammatory attacks are trying to draw first blood and I won't be drawn into your game again.

I could quite easily make insulting comments about people whose attention spans are so short that they can only deal with movies, and not with the time it takes to read, and enjoy, a book.

It appears that if we keep this up, certain people are going to grow tired of it, as they are only interested in discussions about "the film with fans of Jackson's movies". We "bookworms" annoy some people.

I was just ribbing you. I am a bit of a bookworm myself. Have a Kindle and everything! I'm just not anal about adaptations. If a movie is too true to a book, I feel like I wasted my time watching it since I already had the whole story in my head.

And I like reading the discussions of the books above. I just don't want to hear a bunch of pissing and moaning again about things that get changed. It's an adaptation, things are going to get changed, and you aren't going to like some of the changes--maybe not most of them.

Some of you seem to mostly dislike the LOTR movies for the changes they made and I don't see why you're even bothering following the Hobbit movie so closely when the same people are writing, directing and producing it so it's almost guaranteed that you'll be unhappy with their adaptation again.

I just have a pet peeve with people that focus on the negative and spend time and energy following something they dislike. A key example would be TV show threads on any forum, there's always the people posting every single week about how lame the show is, yet keep watching and wasting time complaining about it.

The appropriate mindset to have about these movies is that Jackson and crew are first and foremost making a prequel to their LOTR movies. All indications are that the films will be similar in tone to the LOTR movies and are going to make changes by adding characters, changing characters roles, adding joke dialogue etc. If you can't live with that kind of stuff, why bother following closely and building up negative energy getting annoyed over it?

If you can live with it, and will enjoy the movies regardless of changes, then by all means follow closely, discuss how the book's lore fits what's been revealed like above etc., but save any pissing and moaning about changes at least until you've seen the movies and seen how it works as a film.
