Dimensions:

29.7 cm x 59 cm

_______________________________________

"You have officially been declared a disturber of the peace."

The famous words, spoken by Frodo as Gandalf enters Hobbiton in his horse drawn cart at the beginning of The Fellowship Of The Ring, serve to alert the wizard to the modicum of suspicion by which he is regarded by Hobbits after earlier endeavours.

A visiting wizard spells trouble and hobbits tend not to meddle in the affairs of wizards for fear of disruption and upheaval in their quiet little village in the Shire.

The scene is pastoral in a way that only the Shire can offer. Sheep grazing, oak trees, green hills as far as the eye can see and the great wizard opening Bilbo's gate in Bagshot Row.

Painted by Ben Wootten, artist, illustrator and former concept designer at Weta Workshop on The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Ben was one of the original Weta crew who produced much of The Lord Of The Rings concept art you may have seen in art books and DVD features.

Who better to capture this tranquil outlook from the hill and towards the lake.

Please note - the first 100 hand signed prints have now all been sold.

The external dimensions of the print are 23.2 in x 11.7 in (590 mm x297 mm) and the printed area is 20.9 in x 8.9 in (530 mm x 235 mm). A lovely cinematic format.

It's printed on good quality 170 gsm satin paper and ships rolled up in a VERY sturdy poster tube. The dimensions of the poster tube are such that you can order up to 10 for the same shipping cost! It will arrive in pristine condition, ready to be framed and hung, pride of place, in your home.

The Silmarillion would be great, with incorporations from The Unfinished Tales, as an over-all TV series but self-contained mini-series for bulk stories. I'd love to watch them. Especially the battle with Morgoth, Sauron, the hoards of Balrogs and Dragons. Someone could tell me which battle it was as it was mentioned a few or several pages prior. I'll look it up in The Atlas of Middle-Earth.
As far as I know, Glaurung and Ancalagon the Black from the Silmarillion are the only other two dragons mentioned in any kind of detail in Middle-earth related material. One unusual aspect of those stories is that it took Earendil (Elrond's dad) to defeat Ancalagon, whom even the "gods" from Valinor had difficulty fighting. The battle in the earlier post referenced the fall of Gondolin that occurred as a result of the betrayal of the Elven king Turgon (Duffy posted a painting of that battle).

Didn't Tolkien also make Frost Dragons or were they only eluded to? Holding off on buying the two below even though I have a softcover Unfinished Tales. Were Volumes I-VII in hardcover? I have the first printing, I assume, of Volume VIII, The War of the Ring hardcover from Houghton Mifflin from 1990. Been meaning to buy them but attempting to keep the same design and aesthetic for these.
Didn't Morgoth and Ungoliant destroy the two trees before the Time of the Sun and Moon? Or was that still with the stars? Simaril, right? I really need to reread and brush up on the History of Arda.
I absolutely love the history of Middle-Earth. Oh the two hardcovers with the Ted Nasmith illustrations. Although I'd rather have Alan Lee or John Howe ones.

Not sure about the Frost Dragons, but I don't think the hardcover individual volumes of History of Middle-earth are still being printed (softcover version is available, though). However, three composite hardcover volumes are available that contain all 12 volumes, the following link references Vol. 2, which is the history of Lord of the Rings: http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Histo.../dp/0007105061 . I have this volume and it is excellent. Concerning major light sources of Middle-earth, first were the Lamps of the Valar, Illuin and Ormal (destroyed by Morgoth), then the Two Trees of Valinor (Telperion and Laurelin). Ungoliant poisoned the Two Trees, a result of which was the creation of the "brighter stars" by Varda (Elbereth) from the dew of Telperion, and eventually the Sun and Moon. One of Tolkien's little oddities was that the Sun originally rose in the west. Anyway, there is always something new to find out about Middle-earth, have fun reading!

I'm not sure if the hard cover Histories of Middle Earth are still being printed, but Amazon has many of them in stock and ready to ship brand new. For those that are out of print, you can pick them up used for (usually) a decent price in Amazon Marketplace, but you might have to wait a few weeks for a decent copy to show up.

My last purchase was Volume 5, which is supposively out of print. If you look on eBay or Half, this book is going anywhere from $50-$100, but I picked up a decent copy (Good to Very Good condition) for $15 on the Marketplace. The last one I need is Volume 9, but since its In Stock, I'm waiting for a cheaper used version to come up. All my purchases have been used books in great condition - some of them for a little as $5!

This is a nice painting and I would have considered getting it for myself except for what seems to be a few inaccuracies. For example, Bagshot Row seems to be situated too close to Bag End (the hobbit dwelling beneath Bag End is where I would envisage the party field and tree, there wasn't a "lake" in Hobbiton (closest equivalent would have been the Bywater Pool), and there certainly would not have been a boat on The Water (the stream that ran through Hobbiton) in that part of the Shire. Also, Gandalf's cart is facing the wrong way - he would have approached Bag End from the lane on the east side of the residence.

They're probably filming some documentary stuff to put in as extras with the BD. My guess is that Boyens is telling how they "improved" Tolkien's "flawed" story when they wrote the screenplay for the Hobbit.

Man, I'm not happy with some of the changes they made but it sounds like you really hold a grudge... I'm guessing you don't care for Boyens and Walsh that much

Well since this is a Hobbit thread I would hope that discussion would stay in the LotR thread!

Oh yeah, I'm a book diehard too

Cheers

Just read back through this thread. A few months back it got derailed for a few pages with people ranting and raving about changes they made to the LOTR books etc.

To be fair, it was part my fault since I argued heavily with them.

I like the books a lot (LOTR anyway, not a big fan of The Hobbit book). But I'm pretty liberal when it comes to being ok with film adaptations making major changes as I pretty much look at the books and the movie adaptations as being largely separate entities. Some changes are improvements, some are negative, but I enjoy seeing directors put their spin on a story nonetheless!

I am exactly the same way, although I have my opinions about some of the changes they made and how dreadful I thought they were.

I know The Hobbit films are going to be the same way too, they are going to make changes to the story that they think they need to, and I'm sure I will disagree with them. But overall, The Hobbit is my favorite story of all time and I will just be overjoyed to see it brought to screen!
