Barry Humphries as the Goblin King

"I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves."

Same here.

I just hope that they don't do what Rankin/Bass did and give him automobile headlights.

While I love me some Evangeline Lilly I can't help but feel this bit of casting is Liv Tyler all over again. Liv is a decent actress, but she just felt out of place. I just can't see Lilly fitting into this well either. Not casting early judgment though. I'm open to this.

I'm really depressed about this piece of casting news tbh

Hopefully Peter keeps it as close as he can to the source material and doesn't create another "I can do anything" Legolas character.

Evangeline Lilly as "Tauriel"? I don't follow the name-equivalence of "Daughter of Mirkwood"; certainly "Taur" means forest, but... Anyway, good to see "Tauriel" finally get the respect she deserves after being shunned like Glorfindel from the LotR movies!

Huh? Delicate sensitivity? Emotional depth? For the Goblin King?

Can Barry Humphries play a male figure? Or is the Goblin King going to be a cross-dressing orc?

His big delicate part:

[Show spoiler]"Slash them! Beat them! Bite them! Gnash them! Take them away to dark holes full of snakes, and never let them see the light again!"

Brings a tear to my eye every time.

Hope he is more intimidating than shown in that picture.

I can imagine Boyens seeing this and writing the screenplay to deviate from the book by having Smaug turning on his brights to piss off the people of Laketown.

Looks like they have Mckellan back as Gandalf, but is that a new actor playing Bilbo?

Of course. The other guy would have been way too old.

The younger Bilbo is Martin Freeman.

I know I'm reading too much into this, but the black and green shading between the trees to the left of Gandalf's head looks the head of one of the Argonath kings.

The events in The Hobbit take place 60 years before the events of Fellowship Of The Ring in the year 2941. Bilbo's farewell party is in the year 3001. Those are great pictures. Wish i could get a better look at the Dwarves in the background. Anyone feel that a Barber would go bankrupt in the shire?

The issue with the character is not that there is 60 years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but because Ian Holm has aged. If The Hobbit was filmed at the same time as The Lord of the Rings, I'm sure Holm would have been cast as Bilbo. Unfortunately, Holm is now 10 years older and Bilbo should look the same age as he did at his birthday party in LOTR:FOTR. Remember, the ring perserved his age, and even Gandalf noted that Bilbo "haven't aged a day".

Perhaps CGI could have made Ian Holm look the same age as the beginning of LOTR.

It is indeed possible. And some years back - when The Hobbit was initially supposed to start filming - Holm voiced interest in reprising his role, saying that if they could make him look so old in ROTK, they could surely make him look young.

Of course, with the amount of time an effort needed to CGI him back to young age, it probably would have been easier for Weta to just create a full CG version of Bilbo based on the first FOTR, and have Holm do a voice over with some other actor doing the motion capture. At that point, PJ probably didn't people to think he was trying to pull an Avatar.
