Tolkien alluded to this in a sequel to Lord of the Rings that he started, but abandoned because it was too depressing. I believe fragments of it are contained in History of Middle-earth, vol. 12.

Benedict Cumberbatch Voicing Smaug in ‘The Hobbit’

Happiness! When Martin Freeman let slip that his great Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast in The Hobbit, I secretly hoped that his role would be voicing the dragon, Smaug, even though I suspected he would in fact play Bard the Bowman.

Not long after Mr. Freeman’s revelation, Ian McKellen posted a crypic teaser about the actor’s role, which certainly seemed to point to him playing Smaug. We didn’t run with that at the time because it was still very speculative. But now, just an hour after the confirmation that Luke Evans will play Bard the Bowman — aka the character whose life intersects with Smaug’s in a very dramatic way — we’ve got confirmation that Mr. Cumberbatch will indeed voice the great dragon that lies coiled on a mound of Dwarven gold in The Hobbit.

Here’s what Ian McKellen had to say in May:

Luke Evans To Play Bard in 'The Hobbit'

EXCLUSIVE: Luke Evans has bagged the role of Bard in The Hobbit, a last major part that Peter Jackson hadn't cast in a production that's underway in New Zealand. Bard the Grim is a skilled archer, and the heir of King Girion of Dale. The king was killed by the talking dragon Smaug. The character plays a greater role in the second film, and is somewhat reminiscent of the action-hero exploits of Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn, I'm told.

It seemed evident that the Welsh actor was going to win one of these roles that involve a competition between multiple young thesps. He was a finalist to play the lead in Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy that went to Jeremy Renner, and was a finalist for the role of Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, which went to Joel Edgerton. Evans plays Aramis in the upcoming Three Musketeers, after supporting roles in Immortals, Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans. He's repped by WME and Ruth Young at United Agents in the UK.

By the time the Hobbit comes out on Blu, there will probably be corrected versions of everything for the mythical Uber-edition.

Evangeline Lilly joins the cast

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) The man behind Dame Edna Everage will need to lose the sparkly glasses and pink wig for his new role in The Hobbit.

Sir Peter Jackson this morning announced two new cast members would be joining the production team in its second block of shooting.

Barry Humphries, the man behind Dame Edna Everage, will play the Goblin King. Sir Peter this morning likened his upcoming portrayal of the role to the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. "Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves."

Evangeline Lilly, from the hit drama Lost will take up the role of a new character, Tuariel, a woodland elf. "Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing!" Sir Peter told fans on his Facebook page.

The crew have now finished their first block of shooting and are scouting locations before the second block starts.

The announcement of the two newest cast members, along with the news that Welsh actor Luke Evans will play Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch will play Smaug, means most of the major roles have now been filled.
