I went to the Hobbit in HFR last year, but there's no theaters close by showing Smaug in HFR, darn it.

Same thing here. Just called my local theatre that showed An Unexpected Journey in 48fps and they're not showing Smaug that way.

Regal really went all out with equipping theaters with 48 FPS it seems, but the AMC theater I saw it in last year in Kansas City doesn't have it this year. I'm still going to see it there for the Dolby Atmos though, AMC Theaters is calling it "AMC Prime" now though instead of ETX lol.

So critics say DOS is much darker, and more fast paced than AUJ, and ends on a nasty cliffhanger. Sounds great!

I have the choice here in the DC area to actually seeing this in HFR IMAX as Tyson's system is upgraded as such and played the first Hobbit as such, but I'm not a fan of IMAX 5.0 sound, give me 7.1 or Dolby Atmos sound any day.
I have 120Hz in my HDTV, almost same thing? Also, Tyson's Corner IMAX 3D is HFR?

Cliffhanger ending? I hate that cheap TV show scheme.

Hmmm, I would say about the same in terms of enjoyment. Maybe a little bit more with IMAX 3D although that's simply because I'm used to that format. It took me a minute or so to get used to the HFR and I kept noticing some sequences where it looked like everything was moving too fast. But I enjoyed the HFR experience and I'll likely go watch the second one twice as well lol

Got my tickets for Friday purchased (first time in a while I've purchased tickets this far in advance, but wanted the "premium/upgraded" reserved seats at one of the local theater.

2D for the first time.
Will probably see it in HFR 3D for my 2nd viewing; just debating it a little. Only one theater "nearby" will be showing it in HFR 3D along with Dolby Atmos but it's about a 30-40 minute drive depending on traffic. Whereas the theater 10 minutes away will do HFR 3D without Dolby Atmos (or 7.1 )

Well I know I've probably said it before but I just want to say it again that I don't mind at all that Jackson has decided to expand this to three movies. I'm listening to the soundtrack for Desolation of Smaug, and just from listening to the first song and glancing over at the title, I can say that a certain scene from Unfinished Tales will be included in this movie. I don't see anything wrong with using Appendices and other Tolkien-canon to expand upon this movie at all..there was an awful lot going on behind-the-scenes in the book.

It's them staring at a mountain in the distance, and then BAM cut to credits.

Generally, when you get more than one movie for the same book, that more-ness is just... more! The better kind of more. Where one movie for a book is less-ness.

Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix could have been two movies easy.

I think all of the Potter movies could have easily been two parters. Heck, the first one alone could have been 3 movies.

I highly doubt that, considering they're actually AT the mountain in the trailers...

correct - the IMAX systems can playback HFR - as it did last year for the first Hobbit film.

really? oh well that's new news, because it wasn't like that last year.

comparing this to Regal Kingstowne (Alexandria) location which is also HFR / 3D / and Dolby Atmos - Tyson's may have the larger screen, but the Atmos sound levels are too loud in my opinion - I'll be at the Regal instead (and you wouldn't catch me near Tyson's during the holiday season - what a zoo).

I've always known that, it's the ETX screen I was questioning.
