The reliability of "checking out" is 100%, the question is if there are consequences.

According to my sources they were not only checking out manufacturing facilities but they have everything set up for the day they need to start making Blu-ray movies. I'm not sure exactly what that entails but it's obvious they don't want to be caught flatfooted when they have to move with Blu-ray. This was months ago (I think even before the Paramount defection).

by the way I just sent an email to my Disney rep to confirm if there is any news about Warner going with Blu exclusive. Exact reply was they are hearing the same Warner rumor internally too. Does that mean it's true, I'm not sure because my rep specifically described it as a rumor.

I'll probably know if anything happens before the people at Disney just by looking at this website though.

are 100GB discs still on the BD radar?

As a disc collector, I really want that to compress multi-disc TV series. I hate the disc-swapping/fumbling marathon when watching TV shows on DVD... and I'd like maximize the show-to-disc ratio with HD series like LOST on Blu-ray.

Insiders... any news on 100GB discs and playback in current hardware?

Some interesting quotes from the past.

At the 'launch' of Total HD (now pretty much abandoned):

Quote:
'It behooved us to figure out a way to transition (consumers) from standard definition to high definition DVDs,' Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Bros. Entertainment, told Reuters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. 'From our perspective we don't care if it's Blu-ray or HD-DVD. We just want the transition to occur.'
Regarding multiple HD formats confusing the consumer:

Quote:
Tsujihara disagreed. 'I don't think it prolongs it,' he said, comparing it to the video game business where different formats are expected. 'Consumer expectations are changing.'
But now, things - and thinking - are different.

Quote:
Also there was Dan Silverberg, VP of high-definition media for Warner Home Video, which since Paramount’s move to the HD DVD camp is the only studio to support both next-generation formats.

That may not be for long, Silverberg said. “One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” he said. “When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”
Quote:
“We can definitely talk Blu-ray,” he said. “We are committed to the format.”
The only issue that remains is timing. When Warner choose a side they will be letting down a huge number of people. That's going to happen anyway, so the wise thing to do is bite the bullet and make that announcement immediately - if a decision to back only one format has already been made.

My view remains that one clear unambiguous route (ie: one HD disc format) to upgrade from DVD to HD disc will lead to great success for studios & CE's.

Two HD formats leads to market confusion and failure of the the HDM project - and a very happy Microsoft.

It's obviously much more complicated (read: corporate politics) than my simplified view of things.

I have a question to all.
Please note that the reporting of this news came from BusinessWeek…….you know, that highly regarded organization that just recently sponsored the sit-down talkie session with Sir Howard Stringer (among other notables in the past including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer).

Now if memory serves, one sentence (actually one word) that Sir Howard uttered from that past interview (sponsored by BusinessWeek) was diced, sliced and dissected for its meaning ad nauseau on the AVS forum.

Question (for those who still venture in red ant territory )……Is this BusinessWeek coverage of Michael Burns’ comments being picked up at all on AVS or just being ignored……..or worse ?
