Those do look nice. I know...phone pics, etc., but I would be lying if I said otherwise.

Looks nicely detailed. You can see individual threads in the hat.

The others though, the colors look a bit unnatural.

But that's the movies though. Even in 4K Cinemas to me, the Hobbit movies all had a very pronounced CGI sheen to it. It's all basically a heartbeat away from animation.

I love the movies and the majority of the VFX but i do wonder about the reasoning behind a shot like this.

I like how each elf only has three arrows in their quivers as-well.

They likely had a very good reason to do so.

Pure laziness. It was literally Ian McKellen in a green screen studio, couldn’t they just get a couple of extras and dress them, make up as elf warriors?

I think that the only thing worse than the clone army of elfs was that 90% of Billy Connolly screen time was completely replaced with CGI, it was beyond awful.

I don't think Connolly looked awful at all really. You can tell he's CG (once again, there's a reason though I don't remember it off the top of my head) but it works imo. And yeah, I mean, it's probably something similar to trying prosthetic goblins, it not working and then going with only a few prosthetic ones and the rest in CG.

It's been a while since I've watched the appendices and don't remember if this particular scene is addressed but Jackson isn't a nut, there's always a reason there.
