Looks nicely detailed. You can see individual threads in the hat. The others though, the colors look a bit unnatural. But that's the movies though. Even in 4K Cinemas to me, the Hobbit movies all had a very pronounced CGI sheen to it. It's all basically a heartbeat away from animation. |

As amazing as a lot of the VFX are in these movies, it's like they only created one digital model for the elves and just copied and pasted it for the elf army. It's crazy how close up they went with these CG characters, didn't even bother to have some practical human actors in costume next to Gandalf. I love the movies and the majority of the VFX but i do wonder about the reasoning behind a shot like this.

Pure laziness. It was literally Ian McKellen in a green screen studio, couldn’t they just get a couple of extras and dress them, make up as elf warriors?
I think that the only thing worse than the clone army of elfs was that 90% of Billy Connolly screen time was completely replaced with CGI, it was beyond awful. |

I don't think Connolly looked awful at all really. You can tell he's CG (once again, there's a reason though I don't remember it off the top of my head) but it works imo. And yeah, I mean, it's probably something similar to trying prosthetic goblins, it not working and then going with only a few prosthetic ones and the rest in CG.
It's been a while since I've watched the appendices and don't remember if this particular scene is addressed but Jackson isn't a nut, there's always a reason there. |
