Certainly makes me feel more comfortable with my purchase, just in case DV really blows up.
Since none of the 2017 Sony TVs seems to support 3D, I'm thinking of getting a Z9D as a back up 3D TV.

From my experience (granted I have only tried two movies) I would say the 3D performance on the Z is really the only complaint I have as it is very underwhelming with crosstalk and highly noticeable flicker in brighter scenes. The flickering is only exasperated by how crazy bright the panel gets.

Just a word of warning if you plan on doing a lot of 3D.

I've read about the crosstalk, can't be as bad as on my 2011's HX929 though. The flickering can be eliminated by activating Motionflow, at least on the HX929. Luckily Sony's motion interpolation is one of the best and the SOE is hard to spot when you leave Motionflow on standard mode. The XD94 (my other TV) also exhibits minor crosstalk and some flickering but granted, it's not as bright as the Z9D.

Maybe it'll be a toss between the XD93 and the Z9D then.

Oh interesting, I will have to test out 3D with Motionflow to see if that helps.

Anyway, just wanted to warn you that 3D is really the only red mark I have for the TV but it sounds like you have some extensive experience with Sony and 3D.

I think I'll be targeting a 2018 Sony OLED with my wife's 4k gift as a good holdover until then. Works out well.

Good news for Z9D owners and wannabes. At my 2017 Sony CES meeting I was told the Z9D will get a firmware update to make it Dolby Vision capable.

I've read about that and that's nice but the 3D is much more important to me now.

Stacy, have you measured the color volume on your Z9D? With the QLED tvs being 108%, and 2016 oleds being 67%, curious where the Z stands.

Lord have mercy on you... You and these numbers. There's no way in the world you know for sure the QLED is 108%. And it looks like you're low balling the OLEDs a bit. Just saying...

Robert, this ^ info, plus the Z9D is the last (2016)/2017 model to have 3D, pushed me over the edge. Just ordered the 65" at BBY with the $500 off sale (same as Amazon). Hoping to use the Rewards points towards an Oppo 203 at a Magnolia location (the local is not one).

No 3D on the Sony oled took it out of contention.

So now I will be the proud owner of another Sony, think this will be the sixth one in the last 30 years. The tv is scheduled for delivery later this afternoon, so Heck Yea!!, new toy to play with.

One thing I saw on the Sony site tech specs was this tv does 3D in 1080p per eye. I didn't remember this from the talk back when it debuted, I probably just forgot. And it processes at the 14 bit level, so I'm hoping to be future proofed for quite a while. Only wish I could have sprung for the 75", but not enough Benjamin's.

I've already committed (see post above), but I'm curious about how good the Zed is gonna be.

Yes, all active 3D is 1080p per eye. Passive 3D is 720p per eye. Your Z9D will up-convert the 1080p 3D to 4k resolution.

Well, not all active 3D EVER is 1080p. My current Sony 4K 55X9005B is active but it heavily filters the vertical resolution, it's nearer 540p to each eye for 3D. And the passive 3D on the magnificent Sony 65X9005A was most definitely 1080p to each eye, that's still the best 3D I've seen on any TV.

No. He seems to have taken a break from the forums.

Not sure how passive 3D can be 1080p in each eye, but I have seen some active 3D that is less than 1080p per eye.

It is on 4K TVs because there are 2160 horizontal lines. Therefore when each half is alternated between each eye you get half which is 1080 lines per eye.

It's as bruce describes it [edit] when talking about PASSIVE 4K tech [/edit]: IF the TV has a full 2160-rez polariser (so 1080 lines to each eye, e.g. "true" 1080/eye vertical rez and upscaled 3840 horizontal rez) then it can indeed realise Full HD 3D to each eye, but the problem with such a narrow pitch of lines is that it reduces the vertical viewing angle (for crosstalk-free viewing) considerably. The 65X9005A (or 65X900A over the water there) was one such TV.

Consequently, when Sony made the smaller 55" version of the 65X9005A they were worried that the viewing angle would be too shallow so they used a 1080-rez polariser (so 540 lines to each eye) for a bigger viewing angle in conjunction with a 2160p panel that literally turned off half of its vertical resolution in 3D mode, leaving 1080 active lines to be split between the eyes so the resulting 3D output was left with huge scan line gaps and extremely ugly aliasing from the missing resolution, which wasn't low-pass filtered at least but was simply thrown away. And the polariser itself was also acutely visible during normal 2D viewing. I know because I had the 55", and I got some money back from Sony due to their false advertising of Full HD 3D. (I eventually got it swapped for the active-but-equally-fubar-for-3D 55X9005B, but that is another story.)

Yes, I covered the TV's up-conversion to 2160 in my post, but since original 3D content is native 1080 and the up-conversion just doubles the horizontal and vertical lines by repeating each line twice I did not consider that a true 1080p per eye.

Sony XBR-65Z9D LCD Ultra HDTV Review

Conclusions
Apart from some minor critiques, the Sony XBR-65Z9D performed superbly on 1080p material. When it comes to HDR, we’re still wandering around a bit in the calibration wilderness, but nevertheless I was seriously impressed by what this TV could do with HDR sources—and you’ll be as well. True, it’s really too early for any of us to know if what we’re seeing from UHD with HDR sources, on any set, is what the filmmakers intended as they graded their movies in those formats. All I can say for certain is this: What I see in HDR is very different from what we’re accustomed to seeing in SDR, but after a brief acclimatization, it looked supremely real on this Sony TV. I want more of it.
