Ooops! You're quite right, it's an HDR10 clip and not an HLG one, I think I got confused by the title: http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=155

Still looks fab-ola though. I've downloaded some 'Dolby Vision' LG clips from here (links taken from the OPPO 203 thread) which play perfectly fine in SDR on the X800, I take it they're not actual DV clips and are just generically encoded demo vids?

I assume they're actually DV clips. I downloaded a couple from the links in this thread: https://www.avforums.com/threads/dol...-vids.2039544/

The Journey to Space one especially looks incredible, even in SDR.

For anyone looking for more HLG videos, there are a few in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...9Ih8qQwMgaiOFQ

Geoffy loves them blacks. I am glad I prefer a bias light, since everything has good blacks that way and I don't have to worry about it. I get why pitch dark rooms are preferred by many though. Cool that you love the set Geoff.

I watched Halloween last night in a - yep - pitch dark room and it was so immersive on this TV, the movie itself has quite raised black levels but the letterbox borders were pure black so it was like looking at a 2.35 screen, if that makes sense. In a funny way it meant that I didn't keep getting distracted by comparing the blacks of the movie to the blacks of the borders, because the borders simply weren't there.

Yep. Not making this a debate about bias lights but using one I get that same effect, the black bars are a non-factor. When a movie itself has great blacks it all just blends so nicely. I get what you mean. We get there different ways but however you do it the effect is wonderful.

Good to hear there must be no issues with the active LEDs. My old Vizio was unwatchable with that mode on because of all the bands of light and blooming.

I also use a little bias lighting behind the TV.

I use this.

Usually on its lowest setting, but sometimes turn it off completely.

I agree that when watching 1080p SDR material in a pitch dark room, the black bars are almost non-existent. This might sound strange but sometimes I really do get a kick out of it by just looking at all that black. Btw I have backlight at 5 (more than enough for the bedroom where we mostly watch TV late at night), contrast at 85, gamma at -2 and Local Dimming at medium.

With HDR material however some occasional lightbleed can still be seen (depending on what's going on on the screen) although it's not really bad or anything. Inevitable also I guess (unless you have an OLED) especially with this TV and its peak brightness. It still does a helluva good job of keeping those bars black. Sony + FALD =

this is exactly what made me fall in love with my first OLED, the 930V. in a dark room you cannot differentiate between border and movie. looks fantastic

watching space movie is so good

Yes when i got my first oled (9300) it was on but i did not know it since the screen was all black. Had to hit the power button a few times to make sure i turned it on.

Same thing with a good bias light. Same thing with great FALD. There's lots of ways to get great blacks now.

I'm so looking forward to getting a good oled set. Edge LED is OK, but gee, I'm so tired of putting subtitles on and it utterly ruins the picture with light bleed.

Hmmm that's a good thought, subtitles might mess with FALD or smart LED features. Not sure if I've watched a subtitled movie on my new set yet but I should try to soon to see if it screws with it. Maybe time to break out Nikita.

There are issues with the FALD and blooming, I've already mentioned them in other threads, it's almost as if Sony concentrated so much on not producing any blooming with a pure white on black image (things like credits are amazingly good) that they kinda neglected how it reacts in low-light shots with bright highlights, where blooming is very much apparent.

BUT as I said this is something that's more chronic with HDR and the 1800-odd nits that the TV can produce rather than a 120-nit SDR output which is what I've pegged my SDR at (contrast 75, backlight 10, gamma at -1 and dimming to medium), and it's why Halloween looked so gorgeous from start to finish.

I remember one movie having extreme white/bright subtitles, I think it was Independence Day: Resurgence but I'm not 100% sure. Not very pleasant to look at, rather distracting actually.

Hmm, the KS8000 is the opposite. I notice some very slight blooming around white letters on black background, but I have yet to notice even one instance during a movie proper, no matter the lighting. That's with a bias light though, which helps a lot. I would never recommend the KS8000 to someone who watches movies in pitch black darkness.

I think I will just keep contrast at 85 (10K's settings says 86) in Cinema Pro mode for HDR. 85 happens to be my contrast for SDR in Cinema Pro so if I leave it that way, I won't have to switch picture presets every time I watch HDR material.

Geoff, if you have set contrast at 88 for HDR in Cinema Home like you said in the X800 thread, what mode are you using for watching SDR with your 75 contrast setting? I saw 10K uses contrast at the maximum setting for both Pro and Home?

I still don't get why it's not possible to change pictures settings for SDR, HDR and 3D independently from each other on the same picture mode? Only backlight and gamma can be changed without affecting the other if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway thought I'd post my ZD9 settings here:

I use Cinema Pro when watching SDR and HDR and Custom mode for 3D.

Brightness: 5 (Max for HDR and 3D)
Contrast: 85 (85 for HDR, 84 for 3D)
Gamma: -2 (0 for HDR and 3D)
Blacklevel: 50 for SDR and HDR, 52 for 3D
Black adjust: off
ACE: off
LD: medium
XDR: off (high for HDR, off for 3D)

Color: 54 for SDR and HDR, 52 for 3D
Tint: 0
Color temp: Expert 1

Advanced color temp (for SDR, HDR and 3D):

R gain: -6
G gain: -7
B gain: max
R bias: -15
G bias: 2
B bias: -15

Live color: off

Sharpness: 50
RC: off (20 for TV broadcast)
Random NR: off
Digital noise NR: off (low for TV broadcast)
Smooth gradation: low

Motionflow: True Cinema for SDR and HDR, off for 3D
Film mode: low

Video options: all on auto

Contrast at 85 for SDR seems really low. Have you used test patterns? You should easily be able to max it with no clipping.
