Folding@home is a distributed computing project which is governed by Stanford. Basically, while you aren't using your PS3 or PC you can "fold proteins" (which is basically just doing some computations) and upload the results. You'll never even know that you're doing it. My PC does it while I'm idle (and when I'm on the PC it will not take as much CPU) and the PS3 will do it as a screensaver-style program when you leave it on but are not playing a game.

Basically, you are helping research cures for diseases such as cancer, parkinson's, or other genetic diseases/disorders.

Our team is just the collection of all of our individual machines' work added together.

PLAYSTATION 3 Gravity Grid - (new?) example of a PS3 cluster used for physics research

Quote:
Overall, a single PS3 performs better than the highest-end desktops available and compares to as many as 25 nodes of an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer. And there is still tremendous scope left for extracting more performance through further optimization. More on that soon.

Furthermore, we distribute the entire computational domain across the eight PS3s using MPI (message passing) parallelization. This enables the entire cluster to run together, harmoniously, working on the computation in an efficient way. Each PS3 works on its part of the domain and communicates the appropriate data to the others, as needed.

If you want more people to join, maybe the site should consider a membership tag associated with this. "Top 100 Folder" or something like that maybe?

Default Blu-ray.com just went red

Our Folding@Home team just surpassed the 525,000 points needed to be amongst the top 60.

We're currently ranked #58 in weekly processing power.

BluFlu,
The title of your thread nearly scared the pants off of me. Blu and red should never be in the same sentence, lol...

This is awesome. I hope we can break into the top 10.

Imagine... all these blu-ray supporters (PS3 owners) helping mankind decipher some of the worlds most complex scientific problems.

That is just too cool.

Dumb question... When you're folding, can you do anything else with the PS3? I have the folding app installed on my PC's at work and they're all capable of multitasking but I don't know that the PS3 version is.

BTW... cracked into the top 80 today! I'm gunning for the Top 40 so look out fellas, here I come!

New Folding@Home Features Coming

I don't quite get the music channels thing but I'm sure it'll be pretty self explanatory once we get our hands on it.

As soon as Cris unpacks his PS3 on Christmas day we are signing on in honor of his mom he passed away this year from that horrible deseas.

Another reason why PS3 / blu must win this battle.

sorry no you cant you can only do the other stuff thats in the folding@home like the forums, check your stats, look at the news, etc. but you cant like play a ps3 game while folding so its kind of like something you would do when you are not actually next to your ps3 like at work, sleeping, etc.
