From the folding@home website about advanced mode:
Quote:
Advanced Participation Mode: Advanced participation mode allows Stanford University to send simulations o f varying computational lengths to PS3 users. Because the simulations in this mode can take significantly lon ger, Advanced Mode is only recommended for contributors who run Folding@home for at least eight hours per day .
My guess would be normal is a fixed length simulation.

I hear ya, its not the point...but if it entices other people to start folding, I say let the competition begin
I originally started folding to contribute something small to the cause, but have found myself watching my ranking lately (in the mid-40's if your wondering )
I hope we can eventually find a cure for cancer, I have known 5 people in the last two years who have had cancer and beat it, or died from it.
My grandpa and my good friends mom died, my mom had a small bit of it, and my aunt just came down with leukemia. Its scary stuff!!!

Default fold-a-holic?

Our 3rd PS3 is the 60 GB and sits in the TV cabinet and doesn't get enough airflow to fold without the highest level fans running. This is too loud for my wife, so we can't fold on it.

So I bought a second 40 GB PS3 for the sole purposes of running folding@home 24/7/365. It's entire lifetime will be spent folding. Okay, do I have a problem?

I have a 20 gig from ebay doing the same thing.

You also can get PS3s with busted blu-ray drives and run folding on them. Some people on the folding@home forums have these and couldn't care less for blu-ray or gaming, they just like to fold.

Default blu-ray.com up to #171

We're now up to #171 of all folding teams in the world. That's not bad considering we only have 401 cpus in our team. It's because each of us is contributing 8 cores to the cause when normal users contribute 1 or 2 cpu cores when they fold. Us PS3ers have a super computer at our disposal and we choose to donate our 8 cores worth of cpu computational might and a few extra $$ worth of electricity each month to a very noble cause. I am proud to be a PS3 owner and helping the research and understanding of protein folding.

If you aren't folding, why not?

If you are, consider joining team 56895 and boosting our team's contribution. It helps the blu-ray mindshare cause.

I'm downloading the software as I type this. Quick question though. If I have this running most of the time, do I run the risk of overheating/damaging my ps3?

Only if there's a fault with your hardware to begin with.

Great to see you guys folding, I am a big folder as well, started the day it came out on the PS3 much of for the same reasons you post on here.

I fold for our gaming team, the @NUTZ@ team 55774 although, still it all goes towards a worthy cause. I have been thinking of getting another PS3 just to fold and the 40gb is attractive due to less power consumption and fan speeds.. I am thinking when I get my new HDTV I will put my current HDTV in my bedroom, and get a 40GB PS3 for it to use when I want to watch blu-rays, but mainly to fold..

btw, I just passed 1000 units folded, currently have 2 PS3's folding as well as 3 computers... my home, my labtop, and one at work.. all for a worthy cause..

We are also ranked in top 700 as a team which is not bad for one Socom gaming clan.. about 30 some members.. I am ranked in top 6700 which is not bad individually either..

Have you guys noticed on the stats OS page that the PS3 has been slowly using TFLOPS? It must be all these new games and blurays making people stop folding.

PLAYSTATION®3 827 33335

We used to be pushing 1100 TFLOPS with some 40000 active units

My guess is a lot of people are home all day for the holidays. I almost always get 2 units a day when working, one while sleeping and one at work. Figure people are home all day so they may only be squeezing one in there now.

Okay folks, with today's announcement securing the future of Blu-ray today, lets not forget to give a little bit back where we can and Folding is certainly a great place to start!
