Why are you surprised? The Cell CPU in the PS3 is more powerful than any CPU used in a Windows machine.

Hello. Nice contribution for the team and for the cause. I'm with you; let's get to 100. We need some more folks to fold 24/7, at least some of the time. I fold under the handle BradleyStorm.

It's where you allow your PS3 to do medical research for Stanford. Download the app, set up an account, download a work unit and that's all you have to do to help cancer research!

A work unit is typically 500KB in size and takes 5-10 hours to complete, depending on complexity. You can also do the same for your PC or Mac, but a work unit takes much longer because the processor is not as fast as the Cell.

I posted this previously on a different thread. But I think its a good explanation:

From how i understand it all the proteins in your body fold into different shapes. Diseases happen when a protein "misfolds." So to find a cure or way to prevent these diseases, scientists at Stanford are studying how proteins fold in the first place. To do this they need to simulate it. But this "folding" happens really really quickly, as fast as a millionth of a second. It takes about a day to simulate a nanosecond (1/1,000,000,000 of a second). Unfortunately, proteins fold on the tens of microsecond timescale (10,000 nanoseconds). Thus, it would take 1 CPU 10,000 days to simulate folding -- i.e. it would take 30 years! That's a long time to wait for one result!

Thats where a lot of computers and the PS3 come in. By cutting up the simulations into chunks and giving each CPU that participates a piece or "work unit" we can all help. A finished work unit is sent over the internet to the Stanford University servers

The cell processor in the PS3 is especially good at doing work units. In fact it's about 20 to 30 times faster than an average Pentium PC. Sony has partnered with Stanford so you can easily "fold@home" by just clicking an icon on your PS3.

Some of the diseases they are trying to cure are alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, Mad Cow, emphesyma and some forms of cancer. So its best to help out, you never know when you'll be the one eating the mad beef from a mad cow.

Default Folding@Home Running at 1 Petaflop! (769 TFLOPS from the PS3!)

I checked the client statistics by OS today at 4:32pm pacific time and lo and behold the folding@home project is now running at 1 petaflop or 1000 teraflops! To put that in perspective, the most powerful supercomputer right now runs at 512 teraflops (correct me if I am wrong but thats the ballpark)

The 35,126 PS3s is pulling the most weight with 769 teraflops.

Fold on guys, fold on!
