Cheers to blu for securing Warner today! Will forever be known as Blu Friday. Glad I was here to see it.
I just gave Cris a PS3 for Christmas so I am sorry if this question is dumb but when your PS3 is folding can you still watch a movie or do you need to stop it?

Second question isn't it bad to leave the PS3 on that long?

I've had my original 60 GB running since the March 24th firmware update where we got folding@home. If anything was gonna break, it would definitely done so by now. I only stop it to play games and blu-rays.

So, yes, you have to stop folding while you watch movies or play games. What a great way for us to give back to the community. We get the best games, best movies, and help cure disease when we're not doing either of the first two!

Folding will utilize the whole system, so nothing but the folding client can be run (though with the latest version you can play music currently on the PS3 HD).

I currently have 2 PS3s running 24/7 since the folding client was release early last year. They have never been turned off (even when I was evacuated for the fires in October), and both are used to watch movies and play games without any ill effects thus far.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, if you are worried about the PS3 running too long you can now set it up so it will automatically shut down at a set time frame or when the client finishes folding a protien.

We already had 2 blu-ray players and the only reason we went for the PS3 in the game room was because folding @home. Cris mom (who is still going to my mother in law) passed away from cancer on april 5. So having a blu-ray player that could help in the research was away for us to help humanity while still enjoying the best in high definition movies.

What a nice collection of players... the Pioneer, the Panny, and the PS3. You've got the triple-P-threat goin on!

Great job on getting the PS3 for the express purpose of using it for folding when it's not carrying out its other duties. Sorry to hear about your (soon-to-be) mother-in-law's passing.

I'm on the GameFAQs team, but I think I might switch over to your guys' team. I know, I'm a traitor.

Hey guys, I was always afraid the folding would cause my PS3-60GB to run too hot and didn't really fold much. But, I just got a 2nd PS3 for xmas (for in the bedroom) and it will be folding when not playing BDs.

Yes, if the 60GB is in a cabinet or otherwise enclosed space, it runs hot and the highest speed fan will turn on. The newer 40 and 80 GBs can fold any time any where and run very cool doing it.

Welcome to the team!

Thank you. My 2nd PS3 is indeed a 40GB and it's amazing how quiet and cool it runs.

I have the old 60GB version which is always folding when I'm not using it. I'm using it in an open space and I've never had ANY problems with it.

Oh, and we are now #163!

About 8 - 9 hours for your typical work unit.

....the PS3 will run slightly cooler in the vertical postion. Acts more like a cooling fin that way...with the two largest sides exposed to air circulation.
For those that 'worry' or are concerned while folding. I've verified the temp differences with a Fluke-meter vs horizontal on rack.

I finally finished a work unit and my total didn't go up. It stayed at 7 and started another one. Is it possible none of it registered?

I also switched to the bluray team, but I figured with the completed work unit I'd get switched over on the stat page. Still hasn't happened. It has me listed on GameFAQs with 16 work units, which also isn't right. Weird.

Keep your ps3 folding and give it a day or so for the numbers to stabilize.
