Competition breeds excellence, as long as it's fair and square and done in good fun. I'm highly competitive and I like to turn almost anything I can into a competition, because it adds spice to things that might otherwise be too mundane. Sure, it feels good to contribute to the cause, but if I can beat everyone else and be the highest contributor and gain some acclaim, why, it feels even better!

I'm at position 165 and rising, having joined a few weeks ago. Not bad! Now I think I'll add my laptop and desktop to Team Blu-ray.com and see how high I can get within the team, while also helping the team to rise in the ranks. Watch out, y'all, I'm coming on strong!

And in the end, science wins. Woot!

I just finally was able to get my quad Q6600 folding on all four cores and I turned it back up on my laptop. I set it up on my work PC and the PS3 has been plugging away since Folding was available with a break for while over the summer due to electrical costs.

I ran 1 unit through all machines on AVS and then found the code for here...
time to those AVS Dudders

Nope. Just delete the F@H and re-download.

Let me add some more input to what I meant.

See alot of folks on many forums immediately got upset that there points weren't being added they said would stop folding until there points were added again.

Are the points the reason people fold or is it for the better of mankind, or both?

obviously, no one wants to run their PS3 on the folding program, consuming electricity if there is no way that the data will get recognized as being completed

I'd hate to run the thing for over a week straight and then lose it all when the uploads fail, credit or no credit.

melikefish, what would you estimate a standard PS3 8 hr ~350 point work unit would get if you gave it the full credit that it should be receiving?

Are you asking what I think points for completed WU's on the PS3 should be worth? In my opinion, at least double what they are now.

Right now I believe the PS3s average around 1000 points per day, whereas intel core2duo machines running the SMP client get about 1500+ per day, quad cores 3000+.

A 40GB PS3 goes for $399 now, right? For about $100 more you could buy a q6600 system and generate three times the points: (taken from Fry's specials) $289 Q6600+ECS motherboard, $49 case+psu, $20 mouse+kb, $29 cheap vid card, $49 300GB hd, $29 dvd burner, $39 2GB RAM, install 64-bit linux/free, total = $504. (you could get a E4500 cpu & mb for $129 along with the rest of the above, and generate 50% more points for less than the price of a PS3).

The official line is that "SMP clients typically run on dedicated systems, 24 hours a day, and use more processing power, more disk space, more network resources, more system memory, etc." IMO that may have been true at one time, but doubt this is the general case now. The disk space/network resources and memory use are pretty low - I would think SMP and PS3 WUs are about the same in that regard. Besides, quite a few members of this form are leaving their PS3's on 24x7 (I know I'm one of them, and have read about others buying 'extra' PS3s and using them to fold also).

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-SMP#ntoc13

"To reward those contributors for donating resources beyond the typical CPU client, for completing these work units very quickly within the short deadlines, and for contributing to the development of our next-generation capabilities, we currently set a benchmark value (with included bonus*) proportional to these larger more demanding SMP work units."

I don't see why "next-generation" can't include PS3 WUs. Hey - maybe that's it, we need to lobby for a bonus on PS3 work units!

I'm just happy to contribute what I can. Thank heaven for that autoshutdown feature. My wife always turns the PS3 off because she doesn't want to "waste" electricity. I just turn it on at night and have it turn off before she wakes up

If I could only get the SMP client to work on my machine I would run it instead of 4 seperate clients (1 on each core)

It hangs up on the configuration where you have to enter the admin password...it gives an error that I don't know what to do next with.

Note, my laptop is running the graphical interface and was given a 1500 WU but it took days to complete. Now it is getting 400 WU. It's 3 yrs old (AMD Athlon 3400+ and 1GB of ram) and I think should be running much quicker...is the graphic interface slowing it down?

Thank you for explaining that to me. The points seemed low compared to my core duo iMac running the SMP client. But now I have enough info to post to the folding@home blog. We'll see if they comment on this. Thanks for the info, melikefish. I would encourage others to post here at the official folding@home blog to start the movement to get the PS3 its fair share of the points:

You don't even need a hard drive, a vid card, or a dvd burner. You can just go with booting from a cd-rom

I know what you mean. It's okay to look at it from a gaming perspective, but it's really pertinent towards the greater good to recognize the good each one of us is doing just by running Folding@home. I for one believe it is the easiest way to help science find cures for cancer and develop vacines (if that's what we're doing). I'm sure many would agree.

Unbelievable. After the latest update, I'm still stuck at 8 work units. Been there for months.

As been discussed before, you have 5 days to turn around 1 work unit. If you don't do it by then, that work unit is given to somebody else to work on.

But assuming that there is something wrong with your account, create a new user on your PS3 (don't need to login to the PSN) and fold one unit. See if it takes.
