I'd say that's pretty open. I would agree with actionhawk and probably put it on the bottom shelf as far out in front of the back and nothing on either side. Mine gets full airflow on all 4 sides and I fold in the basement where it's closer to 65 - 68. But those 60s do run hotter than the 40s and 80s. I would take extra care with them. I can't wait to see the re-designed 45nm Cell PS3s supposedly coming shortly. I would then probably be able to run it upstairs where it's almost entirely enclosed. We shall see . . .

Not really... 1. PS3 should go on the very bottom (warm air goes upward, so all the heat dissipated by the device on the bottom shelf goes right into the PS3). 2. Nothing should be surrounding the PS3 (no disks, no back panel, etc...) 3. Periodically check that all the air intake grills in the PS3 are free of dust. Clogged air intake can significantly (often "fatally") reduce the efficiency of the cooling system. |

for my laptop, can I have the same name as my PS3? IE my name on my PS3 is ecnelis. Can I have the same name and they both count for ecnelis? or do I have to have different names for each?
Last question. Choosing the client for me. I have a relatively new Core 2 duo laptop. Should I get the SMP beta client? Or stick with the regular windows vista client? Or should I go with the new GNU client? I have a pretty decent video card in this laptop as well, but I don't know exactly what specs would best suit which. I have the Core 2 Duo T7200 With I think the Nvidia geforce 7600 Last edited by ecnelis; 02-26-2008 at 06:07 AM. |

It is really your call however - you can look through this forum and see issues others have found. It is a good idea to place your PS3 somewhere that has good ventilation, and to clean off the dust bunnies from the air input vents from time to time ![]() |

As far as the client to use, well there of course is only one option for the PS3. For PCs, the GPU client currently runs only on select ATI video cards (X1800/X19xx) which you don't appear to have, so that option is out. So there are two remaining possibilities for your windows Core2Duo laptop: 1) the standard (non-SMP) Windows 6.01beta5 clients (console or system tray) or 2) SMP clients. The SMP client is a bit harder to set up than the standard Windows client, and it will generate the most heat. However it will get you by far the most points. You have two options here, depending on how technically comfortable you are: 2a) The easiest SMP client to set up on a core2duo or a quad core machine is the Windows 5.91beta6 SMP client. (no working FAH 6.x SMP client for Windows currently exists). The con of the Windows SMP client is that it is arguably not very stable (if you do some googling you'll see that many people lose their work if they stop a unit in progress - so much that a number of free apps have been created that you can use to backup/restore your work to limit this). 2b) Many people have found that if they run VMWare on their Windows machine, they can run a 64-bit linux image and then run the 64-bit Linux SMP client. The advantage of this is it is more stable and it also seems to generate 10-15% or so more points per day. The con of this is it is by far more technically complex: you need to know how to use VMWare, have the resources to run a virtual machine (e.g. more RAM), know how to set up a linux image, and how to get around linux. Also if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows 2000/XP/Vista, the VMWare Player/Server (free versions exist) requires a cpu with the virtualization feature enabled (generally E6xxx+ cpus - not sure about mobile/laptop cpus, check Intel's website for your processor) to run 64-bit virtual machines. There is a lot of info on the web about running VMware and FAH. Also - think it is worth repeating that the SMP client will generate considerable heat - and with a laptop, you don't have as many options to better ventilate it compared with PCs. I personally tried and then stopped folding on my work laptop because of the heat issue (not sure if I would have continued folding if it was my personal laptop or not ![]() |

I think it killed my AMD chip too. Thing has run like hell since I tried it. Could be coincinednce though. In the meantime it has been running non stop on my PS3, at least when I am not gaming or watching BDs. ![]() |

I just checked the team rankings page and learned that blu-ray.com will be passing AVS Forum within 7 days.
Kakao is projecting that within 7 days blu-ray.com will be ranked 118 while AVS Forum has a projected ranking of 119. Good job, guys! |

I just was able to get everything back up and running and am now running the SMP client on my Quad core (had to turn off the UAC in Vista to get it to install).
Now am running 2 single core machines, 1 quad core and 1 PS3 |
