team:
If you can spare 5 hours a day on your PS3, you will help us move up in the rankings. Right now, we are in position 112 and the only team that we can't beat that is immediately ahead of us is the Dell XPS team. Everyone else from here to 100 is not folding as much as us and we have a chance to overtake them and break into the top 100.
The problem is that lately, our overall production has dropped and is trending downward. This means people are leaving their PS3s off and not using them to fold in downtime (or you guys are watch a heck of a lot of movies or are playing COD4 all the time).

Any extra time you can allow the PS3 to complete a unit will be great...remember, you can turn it on, let it fold and it can shut off the PS3 when completed. Very simple to do in the options.
Any extra time you can give is for a great cause.

Hey,
I have a question. I like to leave my ps3 folding when I'm at work. Sometimes, I forget to turn it off and it will run for days straight. Because of these extended periods of FOLDING, am I cutting down the TOTAL life of my ps3? I hope not.

Many of us in this forum leave our PS3s on day and night folding. I can't think of a case where someone claimed folding shortened the life of their PS3.

A common sense approach would be to ensure your PS3 has good ventilation / stays cool to reduce any possible chance for issues (this would go for not just folding, but playing games or movies also).

Well, I think it's ventilated well. It rests next to my center speaker below my tv.
My plasma is hoisted above the stand. So the top of the stand contains my center speaker and my ps3.
This is the stand I have. If you're facing it, it would be on the left-hand side.

Of course, I bought for $185, but that's beside the point.

I leave my PS3 on 24/7 and have been doing so for about 9 months now (aside from when I will not be in the house for longer than a day, then the thing gets completely powered off).
No issues whatsoever and I have a 60GB from about 1 month after launch (just missed out on the Ricky Bobby Blu-ray)

You just passed me in the rankings!
I don't think I like it... nobody did that to me since I joined the team.
Ok, I'll have to do something about it...

Yeah, I'm completing a SMP unit in 15-16 hours, plus picking up the PS3 250 points per unit every 6 hours or so and have points coming in from 2 other machines...I'm climbing up the ranks

Better watch out, AlaskaDon is on your heels too!

Nah, he's safe from me. Just look at our daily averages. I'm only running a single core PC, and a single PS3. Both fold pretty much 24/7 though

Q6600 @ stock; but I heavily use this machine for my work physics calculations, so it's using only 50-60% CPU load for Folding.
And last Sunday I've added E6700 @ 3.6GHz with SMP client on it to fight you off. Let's see how this goes... if I still can't catch you, I will start using the Quad at it's full power for Folding only.

1. If you think games stress PS3 any less then F@H you are wrong. And Blu-ray playback is no "walk in the park" either.

2. There is no indication, information, or even just a credible rumor whatsoever that "folding" PS3's have higher mortality rate then the average.

3. My 60Gig was folding 24/7 since June '07 (minus (53x2)hrs for watching BD's); it also survived Houston's summer, folding 24/7 in 80F ambient.

4. Do you really think Sony would create, approve, and promote something that could destroy their PS3's and risk hurting their reputation??

Memorial Villages area...
Yeah, our AC units are begging to be replaced. The only room we're able to cool below 75 in summer is the master bedroom .

we had the complete ac system as well as the ducts replaced....but i guess i can see your point. When it is really hot outside, we can't get the temps below 75.

I live in the clearlake area and work downtown houston.

im not saying folding has anything to do with ,i just mean leaving it going all that time, all pcs,tvs have a lifespan now and the more its off the longer youre gonna get out of it .Ive had my laptop going about 18 hours a day since i got it 2 and a half years ago and the screens packing in and other bits. Its whats technically known as F****d
