[Show spoiler]I got the sense that he was amused that here was this non-Jedi, never used a lightsaber before guy, wielding one and challenging him to a duel. He's like a cat toying with a mouse before he kills it. He's also far below the force levels of Vader and Luke at this point, and that his master recalls him at the end to continue with this training. He's over confident and brash, a lot like Luke running off to face to Vader in EPV.

I could believe Rey handling the weapon a little better because as a scavenger she was already proficient with a staff in battle.

Where did he demonstrate this? When he sliced up consoles?
He was crap and all emotion, he has had no one to train him, he is very much like his uncle

[Show spoiler]I don't think he should have been good with a saber, but if he had spent any time at all training with one with Luke, he should had more than enough of a leg up to defeat two people that had never held one before.

On a Jedi talent scale, he's probably near the bottom, but he's a Sith and that's enough to make him feared by reputation until he does mature, finish training, but his relative strength with the force may be too weak anyways.

Low level Force ability? I would agree with that if not for one thing.

[Show spoiler]The laser blast he suspends in mid air in the first scene of the film. That was impressive and not something we've seen any Jedi, or Sith accomplish.

He's able to detect the blast, stop it, keep it hovering while interrogating Poe, watch him being dragged to the shuttle, follow him aboard before letting go.
That takes serious amounts of concentration to do and that kind of control seems to be lost throughout the film as he comes into contact with his long lost family.

[Show spoiler]They made the dark side look pathetic by having Kylo get beaten by an untrained scavenger (who learned of the force a few seconds ago), moments after he fully embraced the dark side by killing his dad.

I'd chalk that up to JJ Abrams needing something bright and flashy other than lens flare.

Yeah, that's a good point. I kind of figured they might have rewrote the rules a bit though, since Luke's light saber blade looks nothing like the ones from the previous movies. Rough and flickery rather than smooth and solid. Also, the saber clashed with the storm trooper weapon rather than slicing through it, maybe it had some kind of shield, but in previous movies, saber pretty much penetrated anything except other sabers.

[Show spoiler]I also believe the hilt's activation button was not where it was previously seen in ROTS, ANH or ESB, it was closer to the middle of the saber on the opposite side, not the second button from the top, which was actually a twist knob and not a button, but whatever.

As for the crowd control weapon of the FO Stormie, it looked to emit a kind of pulse or energy wave, perhaps it was a shield.

Ugh. I managed to overhear the spoilers of this movie while at dinner tonight. A group of loud teens were at the table next to us yapping about the film and it was pretty unavoidable to tune them out. Not too happy about that, but I guess it was bound to happen.

[Show spoiler]Throwing temper tantrums is supposed to make you more powerful if you're on the dark side.. it's what the Emperor wanted Anakin/Luke to do as he attempted to turn them into his pawns, and Vader did it all the time. And he just killed his own dad, which must be a huge step towards the dark side.

She hadn't even held a lightsaber once before and won against a guy that can freeze a blast in mid air along with her own arm...

Early on

[Show spoiler] Rey establishes herself as a badass fighter with a bo staff as Finn rushes to 'help', which he realizes she doesn't need... Add the force to that mix and Rey becomes pretty dangerous, even if she is just learning to use it... Plus that Kylo/Rey fight essentially began by Rey using the force to make the light saber fly right past him, clearly showing that she can be more powerful than him. The 2 earlier scenes of him thrashing his saber about in and were there to show his training is far from complete and he can't harness his emotions, which is essential to using the force.

Yeah, I kinda looked at it that way too.

[Show spoiler]Kylo is simply erratic with his temper, and just goes to town like a rookie when on the offensive. Not on the level of a Darth Vader, Yoda, Mace Windu, or even Palpatine, all of whom have what is necessary to be a successful Jedi or Dark Side lord: control. Kyle's best effort with the lightsaber was against a defenseless control panel on his ship LOL. And even then, he appeared to be a hot-head with little to no discipline.
