The news will start flowing in the next few months as I'm sure they'll start filming at the end of the year.

Filming starts at the end of 2014? with a theatrical release in 2015? I assumed earlier. rats.

Disney has approached people, and some have vocally talked about it. But Disney doesn't have to keep feeding us information. I'd rather they take their time, like they seem to be doing, and find the right people to do it, than rush it and get someone who won't do a good job. I'd rather we have radio silence up until the big reveal. They said we'd hear more this month, just relax and go with the ride. We're all curious, but just because we haven't heard much in recent weeks doesn't mean something is wrong, it just means they're taking their time to find the right people. That's the best case scenario for all of us.

Nah, 2013. Unless that's what you meant.

Since it's unlikely that they have a director or any actors yet or even a final script I'd say it will be months before the ball really starts rolling, which is why I'd say they'll start filming at the end of the year/beginning of 2014. they need to leave a lot of time in order to do the special effects.

Guys -- Spielberg just bowed out of two projects long in development (Robopocalypse and Interstellar) in the course of a week. Robo had commitments from Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth, and was supposed to lens in March. Interstellar is passing to Chris Nolan.

Hmmm...

Personally, I hope he's not ill. He's 67 after all. My other hope...is it possible? Is he going to helm Star Wars VII?

Probably neither. It was reported that Robopocalypse needed further script work and the Nolan brothers are tackling Interstellar.
It's a shame about Robopocalypse as that would've been Spielberg's first work with Fox since Minority Report.
Perhaps Indy 5?

You are delusional to think Spielberg would touch this thing with a ten foot pole. George, I am sure, has told him all the horror stores of fanboy backlash by now. I think any director who picks this up has no idea what they are getting themselves into.

I don't see Indy 5, maybe ever. Disney even said they have no plans for any future Indy films. I just hope he's ok. That's a big project dump. Either way, something's going on.

Agreed. Indy getting married at the end of the last one, kinda ends it.

I think there's a better chance of Spielberg doing Indy 5 vs. any Star Wars film.
Maybe he's just focusing on all the many projects he's producing. As you stated he is getting up there in age and it's not possible/healty to maintain such a heavy workload. As always time will tell, as Star Wars(at least according to Disney) is on the clock!

Spielberg was set to shoot a film about Abbie Hoffman and the trial of the Chicago 7, and scuttled that at the last minute, so his decision to abandon Interstellar and Robopocalypse isn't without precedent.

Robo was a funding thing, the current script was too expensive. So it's up to Drew Goddard to re-write it. I think it's just coincidence, that this news comes when the new SW film is looking for a director. So I don't think it has anything to do with that. As for Interstellar, as I said, it was handed over to Nolan. Again just coincidence.
I could be wrong....we'll certainly know, one way or another!

An interesting coincidence, though, isn't it...Spielberg cleaning his slate in one week... We'll see.

good luck on that. you would need to be an idiot not to have heard of the fanboy issues. but this is after all the movies so what can the fanboys complain about? sure, you can complain that the clone wars were a joke but that the actors playing Han and Leia's kids don't look right?

i think the bigger issue is that Spielberg wouldn't want to cause any friction between him and Lucas. what if he did a movie and it was the best yet? what if he made decisions that Lucas didn't like? they have known each other a long time, why mess things up.

Lucas has immense respect for Spielberg. Spielberg has already ghost-directed on the series. Who better to get the franchise off on a solid footing? Spielberg would be essentially working for Kathleen Kennedy, not George Lucas, and the two just won 12 Oscar noms this morning for Lincoln. Spielberg shingles at Disney now with DreamWorks. Kathleen shingles now at Disney with Lucasfilm. I don't know guys...I'm daring to hope this could happen. Maybe it's not a wise dare, but it's a whole lot more possible this afternoon than it was a week ago. Can you imagine how the hype would explode if it actually happened? I think we'd see a global film-fan freak out the likes of which we've never seen before. If Spielberg's available and he's on board with the script...daring to hope.

If Spielberg did direct a Star Wars movie in 10 years would he and George fight to the death to see who gets to shit all over it when they change the film by adding stupid stuff to it?

Apparently Lucas has washed his hands of the franchise so it shouldn't matter. If he legitimately gets sour grapes over someone doing a better job than he did, then that really is his own issues to deal with.
