Super 8 was filled with lens flare especially the scene at the train station.

There was no way they would have went with a lesser known name, not for the their first Star Wars movie at least.

Not saying I didn't want an outside the box director, but this choice makes sense from a business perspective.
The fact that they went safe is what gets me but I really hope it succeeds.

I sort of feel like there would be reluctance no matter who got the directing gig. We can nitpick it to death, but in the end, Abrams is a fine director who adores 'Star Wars' like we do, and I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt before we pull out the torches and pitchforks. This man will knock the film out of the park, and will do it in a way fans love. I'm sure of it.

I'm okay with Abrams directing the new Star Wars film. Certainly not the most interesting choice but not the worst. The dude obviously loves Star Wars and I really liked his Star Trek movie. Can't say the same about his other two films. "MI3" felt like an "Alias" TV-movie and "Super 8" felt like an overly pretentious remake of "E.T." by way of "Cloverfield". The only thing I have against Abrams is the way he's essentially tricked everyone into thinking he's a young Spielberg, when there's really nothing to substantiate that.

As for the other candidates, I really wanted to see a David Fincher directed SW film as fan-wanky as that sounds. I was praying Jon Favreau wouldn't get the job.

I don't get all this 'lens flare' hate. Revenge of the Sith opens with a lens flare for gods sake. It's already been done and out of all the things Revenge has been bashed for, I don't remember 'lens flare' being one of them...

I would've liked to see Brad Bird at the helm, but Abrams is a great choice.

You can tell that movies like Star Wars and the films of Steven Spielberg have been a massive influence on him. He has the same sensibilities as Spielberg because he puts just as much emphasis on characters and story as he does on the special effects. He also knows not to make a film dependent on the effects and action, while still knowing how to use spectacle to help tell a story.

The big complaint about Star Trek was that it felt like Star Wars. Well, now he's doing Star Wars.

As for the lens flares... I don't mind them at all, and there's quite a few lens flares in Star Wars as well.

I'm glad that they chose Abrams over someone who just cares about special effects like Len Wiseman or Brett Ratner, and over someone who's vision might be great but unsuitable for Star Wars(Fincher, Aronofsky, would be too dark)

I think it'd be cool if Abrams directed the first film, but handed the torch over to someone else for the other two, which George Lucas did for the original trilogy. It'd be great if Abrams did Episode VII, but... Brad Bird did Episode VIII and someone else did IX.

Love lens flares love new timeline, feel apprehensive at potential homogenization of both franchises, this is my only gripe, I want the movies to be diametrically different from each other..There is going to be soo much acid from "real" trek fans, they call themselves and will likely feel vindicated .

Still I await may 16th!

My worry is that Abrams might try too hard to make VII a tribute to the other SW films without having it stand on its own. I feel like the problem with Super 8 was that it felt like a tribute to Spielberg, without being as good as the movies it was paying tribute to. Because of that, you'd constantly compare it to Close Encounters, and it'd just remind you that Abrams was not as talented as Spielberg.

Star Trek was great, and it really felt like a Star Wars film, and I thought MI3 was better than the first two because Abrams put more emphasis on the characters and story.

Maybe Abrams will create an alternate timeline where Anakin doesn't turn into Darth Vader.

To those who complain about this choice, it could've been a lot worse. They could've given it to Brett Ratner.

What they need to do is call Gary Kurtz and get that thing back on the right track.

I'm not too concerned at the moment as they have Michael Arndt doing the script. Though I imagine it's only a matter of time before Abrams brings on Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof and the four of them hash out their own story.

I would hope not. Star Trek is very different than Star Wars...

I just hope that he gives it that Star Wars excitement and atmosphere that the original trilogy had.

I really hope they don't do any of that alternating aspect ratio stuff they do with films made partially in IMAX. Seeing as Abrams is doing that for Star Trek Into Darkness, it's about the only thing I could see I wouldn't like with him directing.

diehards would argue otherwise, though I don't buy this too deeply.

It is on the right track, at least in my opinion. Abrams is a perfect fit for this. I think everyone needs to give him a chance before crucifying him.

People can't do that. It's gotta be their way or no way.

I know how incredibly talented Abrams is and I enjoy many of his films but I am hesitant with this... I have been hesitant since the beginning of this new trilogy, Star Wars as it is is so definitive to me that I have a hard time seeing this happen, but I imagine trekkies felt the same way with Star Trek in 2009. I do wish someone else could have gotten the chance, though. I'm trying to avoid pessimism and find a balance with optimism for now.

Star Trek 3 and Star Wars IX are the same movie. It's a bold move, and I can see it annoying many fans, but we'll see how it works.
