Is it because this will make the new films look more like the original trilogy since the prequels were shot in digital?
If so then i can understand and this is good news!
Basically yeah.

Aren't they "fake" lens flares too? As in ones added in post production? I don't actually mind lens flares if they are natural as its a side effect of the anamorphic lens.

Funny thing is that if they shot digital now, the films could actually look good as compared to AOTC and ROTS, but I still support this.

I really don't think this a step in the right direction. The future of film making is digital. The digital cameras are improving dramatically in each cycle. The reality is that today's film stock is going to be significantly better than what was used on the original trilogy. So as far as matching the look of the original films neither film or digital will 'match' the look. Matching the look will be done in the art department.

It's true that the film will look far glossier than its 35mm predecessors - see Indy IV compared to the other three - but it'll still have the familiar anamorphic foibles which will help to ground the visual effects. It'll be the best of both worlds, with the sharpness of a modern digital finish and the classic look of anamorphic.

nobody cared when the first one appeared on the screen but when you hit the 100th, it tends to tick people off especially when there is still an hour of movie left to go and the flare is coming off of an apple or something silly like that

interesting idea to film it in 35mm. truthfully, I was never sure what the whole digital/35mm fight was about. a theatre doesn't care how it was shot - they will still get a digital version of it if they want. other than a little more hassle, who cares? it will still be edited, color corrected and all that in a computer just like digital will so if they want to do it that way, I say go hard.

FILM! FILM! FILMFILMFILMFILM! Still not sure about Abrams as director (seeing how he's not really a half mad visionary like Lucas was), but who cares? FILM! At least it won't be eye piercingly sharp like many others are (looking at you, Muppets). Although I do question how much he's going to use it, since he used Red cameras in a couple of shots in his last couple of movies (Super 8 And Star Trek 12).

Ooh yay, 35mm. Let me know if they decide to film on 70mm, then I might give a shit. Until then,it's still just another Star Wars.

Surprising that this is being filmed on actual film. Now J.J., could we get some IMAX scenes to go with it?

please don't call it Star Trek 12 - call it by its real name: "Space Seed/Wrath of Khan mash-up"

Really don't get why they'd shoot something on 35mm that's going to have a crap load of digital effects added post production and then projected digitally to the vast majority of cinemas because none of them have 35mm projectors anymore. Unless they go back to the old method of in camera effects, puppets, models, etc then really, why?

The choice of what to film the movie with and the use of special effects are two completely different things.

Unless the movie is going to be in development hell for years, then I don't see it.

Ahhh. It's just that the post was sort of out of context.
