Mainly everything was miniatures blended with green screen. I think the cgi sets showed the most in aotc. It's funny watching them film the Arena fight sequence and how much Ewan hated working with so much green screen.

I am trying to determine if the "soccerball" droid is practical or not... It has a real looking bounce to it.

I also hope we get lots of practical costumes.

No, many were sets and real locations, many were miniatures and other many were matte paintings and CG.

A few examples of those "non-existent" sets:

Well then Ewan is truly a master actor because I caught nary a hint of any ill feelings coming from him. He covered it well. You know, I was amazed when I found out that a good deal of the shots of Kirk and Sulu falling on Vulcan were done by having the actors stand on mirrors, aiming the camera straight down on them, and applying the shake to simulate the wind speed of falling. JJ strikes me as a lover of the old school who also utilizes the new school to great effect.

LOL, no.

The problem is that people keep arguing against things which no one actually said. No one said there wasn't a single set or miniature built for any of the prequels.

And no one said there was going to be NO cgi at all in these new movies.

Reasonable people know there are a myriad of techniques used when making these fantasy movies.

Reasonable people also know that does not automatically mean all of these techniques were used equally well in all situations.

For example, any reasonable person can see that a guy in a real stormtrooper suit looks better than those pathetic looking all-CGI fabrications in the prequels. Or that plate background photography of real landscapes like that body of water, mountains, and fog mixed with CGI enhancements in the trailer looks 1000X better than those videogame backgrounds of Kamino in Attack of the Clones.

I highly doubt the droid is practical, the top bit doesn't seem to affix to the 'ball' in any way.

This is the first bit of mass marketing for this film/the new trilogy and they are getting the hype built up based on this film itself and not just throwing out flashes of Hamill, Fisher and Ford saying, "LOOK! They are back! Come watch!"

They'll be part of the draw and marketing later of course, but I like that they are starting the push off in this way.
I just said something like this. JJ has always been thus. He saves the very best for last and doesn't tip his hand on a big play like this.

The Rebels TV show is canon, and they have an academy for training Stormtroopers. We've seen it. We spent a whole episode there.

Again with this, those clones didn't look pathetic to me. I did not know until only a couple years ago that they were all CG. That's impressive to me. Yes the effects look awesome in this trailer, but that does not negate the work in the prequels for me any more than they negated the best work in the OT. Of course these will be more advanced as it will be a solid decade (my how time has just gone) since ROTS next year.

"Looks better", such a measurable and objective term...

Why not say: any "reasonable person" shares the same opinion I do?

And "reasonable people" don't complaint about misconceptions, so calling that vocal group "reasonable" doesn't seem very accurate.

This trailer did nothing for me. I don't even feel that there was a money shot in it.

Also, a loong time ago, WEG made a Star Wars RPG and the guide books were mostly canon, getting their infos directly from Lucasfilm.
I remember very well the guide saying that the Stormtroopers were now recruited, and they even had a mock up Recruitment flyer in there.

And that's really all that matters to me. Sure I have some preferences when it comes to special effects too, but I can't be bothered to get overly hung up on which exact technique or combination thereof is used just as long as it's done well and sells the illusion. The droid looks great to me, regardless of how exactly the effect was achieved, and I'm happy with that.

I have no idea what to say to someone who thought the clonetroopers in the prequels were real, physical objects and not 100% digital graphics. I can't argue with your perceptions of what you are seeing, all I can say is that it couldn't have been more obvious to me. Surely I am not alone on this.

I am really pissed off right now. The teaser trailer left me teased. What the hell kind of crap are they trying to pull here?

Look, to say you like the look of cartoon digital graphics over visuals that look "real" and tangible is fine I guess but IMO it unreasonable to say both look equally "real"

Jedi Temple hall, Naboo landscape, etc... What, do you think matte paintings (classic trilogy included) aren't also added in post-production replacing blue screen?

Both have realistic aspects. None of it is real.

Sorry, not seeing any evidence of actual matte paintings in the prequel films. As in, painting, as in, oil paint-to-glass.

Haha, ok. I could post example after example but there is no point with someone who apparently sees things through a dingy dishwater haze.
