I think the highly stylized lightsabers are a really bad idea, including the crossbar on the hilt. I liked Darth Maul's double blade, but General Grevious wielding four at once was pushing it too far. The whole point of that weapon is for it to be stealthy and civilized, to the point very few can even use them without proper training. I understand Disney wanting to sell lots of toys, but it can also backfire if they don't appear in the films. The whole thing is a catch-22; older fans will cry foul if its too heightened, while new ones will do the same if its not.

At Disney you can build your own lightsaber from a batch of parts they have. Mix and match, pick and choose...there was always a line, and my oldest son and youngest daughter (10 & 3) loved it. The other two kids wanted other stuff though.

Regardless, it was a very popular 'attraction' in all the gift shops that had it.

Here's a youtube video:

I wish it was that empty and calm when we were there a few weeks ago.

So, we can all at least agree that either Avengers: Age of Ultron or Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens will be the #1 movie of the year? The other will be #2.

I am personally betting on Star Wars taking the top spot. Given the return of the original cast and because it's no longer George Lucas directing (after the amount of negativity surrounding the prequels). J.J. Abrams also has a following and that will presumably add to the film's reception/in-take somewhat (although most people will see it because it's Star Wars above anything else).

Especially with foreign box office. It'll do well here, but foreign? It's going to crush avengers world wide. Domestic is the only thing I am hesitant on.

I know I'm in the extreme minority here, but the return of the original cast is actually one of the things that convinced me that I have zero interest in this.

I figured that there must be something like that there are Disney. I would've loved that as a kid. As an adult, I don't think I'd wish that lady's job on my worst enemy.

BTW, this isn't the first time Hasbro released a build your own lightsaber kit. This is the earliest one I remember:

This new one is by far the dumbest looking one however.

This is the Internet. Agreeing is not allowed. I'm go against the grain and guess Star Wars takes the top spot this year here at home.

I think Star Wars will perform better than The Avengers 2, but either way, both movies will end up making a butt load for Disney. That's guaranteed.

I think it will be a super interesting test to see if Marvel films are the new biggest thing ever for the current generation, or if Star Wars keeps the crown.

JK Rowling is continuing Harry Potter with new films and if she decides to keep going I think Marvel and Star Wars will be fighting out for number two.

IMO the only thing that can take out Cameron's top spots is Age of Ultron. I think it has a better chance of taking AVATAR than AVATAR 2 has.

This will absolutely be successful, top 10 B.O. Worldwide, but I don't seeing making it the high. All that said I'm not expert and I could be wrong

It kind of makes sense that it's always the bad guys who are elaborate with their lightsabers and fighting style. The dark side tends to lead to some really stupid decisions. I'm fine as long as the Jedi keep it simple.

I like the crossbar hilt idea a lot actually, but some of these other designs are a bit much and I wish they just kept the hilt

Avengers did pretty well in foreign markets, about 60% of the haul.
boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avengers11.htm

The prequels all made 55% (ep3) or closer to an even distribution of profits.

Star Wars will not come within a 100 million dollars of Avengers. In fact Star Wars has the greatest risk of the two when it comes to bust potential. If the new characters are not very interesting at all and the older cast is just there for support I can see this thing not going very well. Also, the Star Wars fan base is pretty fractured right now so I think The Avengers wins easily.

Haven't read really much of the prior posts yet, but months ago I predicted that Episode VII will shatter the records for highest opening weekend domestically, besting Avengers' $207+ million opening. I still stand by that. Not sure what Avengers 2 will make domestically on opening weekend, but I think Episode VII will beat that one as well. I think with a return to more practical effects shots as well as the nostalgia for seeing the original heroes from Episode IV-VI in this film ... it's gonna be HUGE.

There's little doubt that Star Wars and Age of Ultron will score big time, fighting for the number one spot. Star Wars will win, I guess. But I have the feeling everyone forgets about Jurassic World, I believe it will be up there one the same level, box-office wise.

Do not underestimate the power of the force. Star Wars mania will be back. There are generations of fans now spanning the 2 trilogies. The Star Wars name alone is enough to bring people out in droves. Not only the established fans but casual movie goers and the curious.
My prediction, Star Wars will be number one at the box office, at least for 2015.
