While you're probably right about the opening weekend, I think Avengers will ultimately win out, and quite easily. I just think it's going to have the stronger staying power. The first movie, in its 18th week still grossed nearly $3M.

I have a feeling that SW will start out crazy strong, then drop off much more quickly than Marvel's offering.

Then again, in those weekly box office threads, I'm almost always wrong, so ...

I think there's a good chance of either "winning." Remember everything is cyclical and limited in Hollywood. The comic book craze is going to fade eventually, probably when something in another genre soars past the years biggest comic movie and starts a new trend or focus. Star Wars could easily be that film, as could any number of others.

Really this is two massive hulks ramming each other, I don't think anyone knows which will come out ahead yet.

While I think Age of Ultron will make more money, I think it will be closer than that and wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see Star Wars take the win. Just look back at the numbers for the prequels. They did huge business that some of the biggest movies of today don't do and that's when not even considering ticket price inflation, 3D, IMAX, etc.

While I don't expect it to happen, I would love to see one or both of these films dethroning Avatar
(Domestically that is...dethroning it World Wide would be insane to predict for any film simply because of how far out its total was from anything we have ever seen)

I'm looking forward to it as well. He should be on Yoda's level by now. His Skywalker blood should make up for the difference in the force experience Yoda has because of his age.

But Star Wars isn't really Sci-Fi. It's fantasy with sci-fi in it.

I'm not sure what you mean by the fanbase being fractured. Even OT purists who aren't keen on what they've seen so far will see this, otherwise they wouldn't be fans.

My guess

Star Wars: 420 - 450 Million
Avengers: 550 - 580 Million

It will take repeat viewings to reach these numbers

I agree. Avatar is the real target and I believe Star Wars has the best chance to surpass it of anything thats come along in a while now. Star Wars is a much more worthy franchise to hold the #1 spot anyways.
I can't wait till the first official trailer releases. The fever for this film is going to skyrocket. They need to market Episode VII really well and I believe they will. I'd also be shocked if JJ doesn't give us a great film.

Right now, this is not my most anticipated movie of 2015, and I honestly wish it was. I think hopes are a little dashed after the PT. But I don't at all expect it to be that bad, I just worry it will go in a direction I don't want it to go, based on some of the rumors I've heard. I'm sure a trailer featuring the OT cast will change a lot of things tho!

Order that I am most excited about.
SPECTRE
Star Wars The Force Awakens
The Avengers: Age Of Ultron

If SPECTRE is as good as Skyfall it could also beat out The Force Awakens.

Key to your quote... "everyone forgets about Jurassic World"

I don't doubt that Jurassic World will be big, but it's just been too long, and while Jurassic Park III was good, Lost World ruined the franchise ultimately.

I see JW opening big, around $100 million, but it will fall off hard in the US, maybe topping out around $250 - $275, no where near Star Wars or Avengers. (Nothing to sneeze at, but considering how much money is going to be dumped in marketing, not that big.)

Internationally it will be on par with them, probably earning a WW gross of a billion.

Bohoo, it's still the same. Some people are just more genetically prone to be able to feel the force is all. Same with religion actually...

Turning a mythical energy into bacteria was a very stupid idea imo.

I think it made the force less mysterious.

But anyway this a thread for Episode VII, not the PT.

There are no midi-chlorians in Star Wars. There is The Force which is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

Also Anakin and Obi Wan were great friends, Yoda was Obi Wan's teacher and Vader hunted down the Jedi instead of just killing a bunch of kids. Luke and Leia's mother also died when they were young but only Leia remembers her.

I think people forget about Spectre in the box office discussions because Skyfall was such a 'quiet' billion. I didn't even know it made a billion until a month or two after it had closed and I saw it on BOM...and I worked for a theatre chain at the time

It was the kind of billion dollar film that impresses me more because it did it without the 3D premium and possibly without IMAX, I don't remember if it was in that format but I could be wrong.

Edit: Yep, it was in IMAX

I'd be surprised if we ever heard the "M" word again. JJ is a fan of the OT and I'm sure he's just as eager to ignore the unmentionables from the PT.

I don't care which film wins the 2015 box office, VII or Avengers2, I'll see them both because I like them both.
