Yep. The way the prophecy was talked about in the movies was always about "bringing balance", right up until Obi-Wan's "you were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!" anyway. I agree with wormraper, I always saw that as the Jedi misinterpreting the prophecy to mean that the baddies would be wiped out, when what Anakin was meant to do was destroy the Jedi AND the Sith, to wipe the slate clean, and that's exactly what he did.
And by "Jedi" I don't mean "all force users", I mean the dogmatic, inflexible organisation that was the Jedi Order. Yes, there were survivors like Yoda and Ben but the Order itself was gone, and although they continued to practice the ways of the Force they had moved beyond the Order's own tenets by embracing Qui-Gon's teachings re: the Living Force and the Cosmic Force. |

That was my understanding as well, the prophecy is to have equal light and darkness. Before most the Jedi have been destroyed during Episode III there were too much light. Which brings to a theory that has always been in my head since the prequel, will we see both of the Jedi and Sith destroyed by the end of the Skywalker saga? Because when Sith still exist, balanced or not, the galaxy will never have peace. Destroying both will bring the real balance.

I suppose one can look at all this Chosen One chatter and think 'well, now, to be fair...people are still discussing this stuff years later, maybe it actually served its purpose' but I dunno.
The virgin birth and the prophecy/Chosen One had my eyes a'rolling the first time I saw TPM and nothing in the rest of the prequels or The Clone Wars (which I liked a lot) have substantially changed that. It seemed like ill-conceived window dressing at the time and it seems that way now. |

I liked the idea of the prophecy, and that it meant wiping out the dogmatic Jedi Order. When you think about it, the Jedi were not black and white heroic good guys- they were almost like a cult, raising children not to act like people but as tools to protect the Republic, not allowed to fall in love or form attachments.
Plus they were so easily led into fighting a war on behalf of Palpatine for a system that had become corrupt and wasn't really working anymore, and then it finally bit them right on the ass. I didn't think Lucas portrayed these ideas very well in the actual movies, but I'm kind of guessing that's what he was trying to go for-- The Jedi had kind of lost their way and whatever the original order's intentions were, and Anakin then as the Chosen One was to "bring balance to the force" by bringing an end to that dogmatic system they had established. Those themes were definitely explored in Timothy Zahn's initial sequel trilogy of books, where Obi Wan declares Luke not the last of the old Jedi, but the first of the new. I wonder if the new film trilogy goes into these ideas. |

I never saw it as being the definitive adjustment of good and evil in the entire galaxy, but that it prophecied the end of both the Jedi and the Sith in their (then) current forms. Anakin/Vader doesn't only destroy the Jedi, he takes out the Sith hierarchy as well by killing Palps and giving up his own life in the process. Each side had gotten far too powerful - the Jedi through their entrenched ways, the Sith through their mastery of the dark side (having hidden for a thousand years) which overwhelms even the Jedi's senses - and it needed a slash-and-burn to remove both sides of the equation.

Neither Dooku, Sidious or Vader had more than one apprentice as far as I know. The "rule of 2" exists because the Sith are always killing each other over power. There's always one who's willing to be subservient to gain knowledge of the dark side but eventually recruits an apprentice of their own to help kill the master. Or the master recruits a new apprentice to kill the other.

I see that people are talking about the technical ground rules of jedis/siths from the awful screenplays from the prequels. Hopefully Abrams will avoid all that and go back to the simplicity of the OT where the movies heart was centered around the characters, rather than be centered around the mumbo jumbo filler dialogue from the prequels.

![]() ![]() A Japanese jeweler has made a gold replica of Darth Vader's helmet and minted gold coins with the image of the famous villain engraved on them to celebrate the forthcoming seventh film of the "Star Wars" saga. The helmet will be on display until May 6 on the third floor of Tokyo's Ginza Tanaka store "for the delight of fans", the company's public relations manager Ayako Inoue told Efe news agency. The helmet was made in collaboration with Disney and will go on to join the producer's collection. http://blogs.wsj.com/japanrealtime/2...play-in-japan/ |
