I thought "A New Hope" was added in '81, after the initial release of "Empire".

Nope nope!

He had a vague idea of a longer story but the whole "9 episodes planned out" thing is fan myth. He has also gone on record a tooooon of times saying it's Anakin's story and it's finished with episode 3, six total. Also while Disney did consult with him it was confirmed none of his idea were used.

Sorry but it was in a magazine called starlog back in the eighties. Also when he was working on the prequels, specifically ep I he stated he didn't have a desire to do all nine eps, and said he would probably be dead before he finished or at least be extremely old. He also stated a desire to do other projects after the prequels.

I read a lot about the movies and such. Just so you know...read the star wars wiki...in the " splinter of the minds eye" novel rerelease in '94, Lucas wrote a preface about how the movies were envisioned in nine parts...

He did plan for 9 episodes, actually in his famous binder of yellow ruled paper he even wrote down blank sections for episodes 10-12. He talked to Mark Hammil in 1982 about doing a sequel trilogy "30 years from now" or something to that effect. But once he got into the prequels, he realized it will take 10 years for another trilogy, and that will be daunting commitment at his age. So he really did decide to end the saga with 6 episodes in 2005, he wasn't lying he really meant it. Then came the idea of passing the torch to someone else so I guess this is when the thought of the sequel trilogy came back again. So in June 2012 he appointed Kathleen Kennedy as co-chair of Lucasfilm and eventually the president once the deal with Disney came through.

You're right aiman, he did indeed think about doing a sequel trilogy and more. I've got a BBC documentary where Spielberg and Rick McCallum both explicitly say on camera that 9 episodes was the plan, but after the prequels were finished Lucas came out and said that the sequel trilogy was a myth, that he wanted to tell the story of Anakin which was now done, and that talk of the other episodes was a "creation of the media", despite one of his best friends and one of his closest confidants saying otherwise.

If he'd simply said that he was done with Star Wars there'd be no argument, but he always has to take it further, to stamp his ego on everything by tailoring the truth to fit his own ends. That's why I generally take anything he says with an Endor-sized chunk of salt: the man has been consumed by his own myth.

Heh. That leads in to what I just said: the myth that Lucas created around him is swallowed not only by himself but his acolytes too, those people who've accepted the 'no more movies' line even though George had himself thought about doing plenty more back in the day. Disney have ultimately ignored his ideas, yes, but the very fact that he gave them story treatments as part of the LFL buyout deal flies in the face of the established Lucas lore that it was only ever going to be 6 episodes.

Brilliant.

At least it didn't have Mickey Mouse ears on it.

So not true. Lucas was talking about 9-12 films since the 70's, it isn't fan myth, and Lucas worked up treatments for 7-9, and yeah, Kasdan and Abrams are using concepts and ideas from those, but only as inspiration. Lucas wrappped everything up in nine, LucasFilm is going to take the saga to twelve.

Well it seems he has said both things at different times, so whatever. I just said what I read, I don't care enough to battle over when he said what.

If the new movies are good then yay. If not then oh well.

I had heard that Lucas had decided upon 12 episodes but that Return of the Jedi was an amalgam of what 6-9 would have been, because after TESB Lucas wanted to get Star Wars over with. His ideas for 10-12 were probably used to create the layout for what he gave to Disney for 7-9.

That, is NOT the right attitude to have in a Star Wars forum Sir!

I feel weird even being in these threads most of the time because I think ESB is the only great Star Wars movie and am not a super fan. I'm an ESB super fan. Where's the thread for that?

what ever he gave Disney sucked mouse balls, since they scrapped most of his ideas for EpVII.

Guillermo Del Toro:

“This is not real, this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it. I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”
