That's what drives me nuts with this movie. First off, he isn't using all practical effects - you can see that from the footage that has been released. There are tons of cg effects. In one part of the second trailer, you see someone walking down stairs but a greenscreen surrounds the whole set and there is a greenscreen instead of a ship - the only thing practical are the stairs. That's practical effects? As well, it isn't how the effect is done, it is how it looks in the end that counts. So JJ build a real droid and some sets and suddenly this film is setting a new standard for practical effects? Come on people, he isn't using any more practical effect than the last Planet of the Apes movie did, or any other movie for that matter. He is just hyping it up more. Want to see modern practical effects, watch Interstellar. He isn't returning to old-school movie making, I don't think he knows how. Remember this is the guy who actually had them create cgi lensflare in previous movies - he don't hate cgi in any way.

For the record, JJ actually used real light sources to create his signature lens flares. Also, Interstellar used a wise combination of CGI and practical to make some pants-shitting visuals. Same with the recent Mad Max: Fury Road.

Honestly, I don't care whether you use CGI or practical; if you put so much care into making the effects completely blend in with your shots and effectively enhancing the overall execution of the narrative, then that's what completely matters. Life of Pi and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had fantastic CGI, and they've managed to find acclaim in both audiences and critics alike.

Yes, but they used the few real troops as a reference thus yelding a much better result, if the CGI artists of the PT had at least a few shots of Temuera Morrison in clone trooper armor to work with it would have been much better.

I disagree. I think they look just fine and perfectly believable. Also, they're Clone Troopers, so they have to be the exact same height and in perfect uniform. They aren't Stormtroopers. The only thing "real" in that bottom right shot are the first few Stormtroopers. Everything else is digital, just like the AOTC shot. As for the two top shots, they are very similar - the foreground is a practical set with actors and the background and landscape is entirely digital.

JJ says there's going to be no new trailer or behind the scenes footage at D23. So everyone can relax. The official trailer(s) will come in the Fall.

My guess is Thanksgiving, like last year.

He could be lying, but I wouldn't mind if the focus was on Rogue One.

Thanksgiving sounds a little too close to the film's release for a full trailer. I'd guess mid-October.

I explained ALREADY that they could have used a single actor and replicate him instead of going full CGI or at least have some reference of a single actor in a suit to make more convincing 3D models, but either you are willfully ignoring me or you just can't read.

It's unnecessary since they won't be using it for photography. The digital costume is seamless and looks just like a real one would if they scanned it.

Oh please. We're comparing filming techniques between two films in the franchise, one of which is the title of this discussion thread.

Don't you dare disagree with my baseless speculation, Kubrick! And buy a comb!

No, it doesn't, if you notice the plastic plates never stay perfectly in place on a real costume like with the CGI troopers.

We actually have a CGI/practical effects debate thread active very recently, can we keep that topic to that thread? Not trying to act like a mod or anything, but it's tiresome having all the Star Wars threads filled with the same debate. I realize I am just as guilty as many of you for stoking the fires.

As long as we are cordially discussing how films in the Star Wars franchise compare to one and other with regards to the new film, I don't see why that should be a problem.

The plates do move accurately though. Look at practically anytime they move. Even the pouches move correctly.

That is because after a thread is closed / posts removed kind of says beware

Next thing is you just had a short suspension from a super mod about the Star Wars threads ~ Did you not!!!!!!!!!

Discuss the new movie here & leave the older ones out ~~~~~ Please!!!! Thanks!

So anywho...Is there anyone else who is avoiding all footage of this so they can go in fresh? It is so hard to do but I think it will be so worth it.

Heck no! Spoil me as much as possible. That's one of the problems with the prequels, everyone had their own idea of what it was going to be like after 16 years of self speculating and it didn't match their expectations. I read the novelization of TPM before seeing the movie so I had an idea of what it was going to be like. As for TFA, I've already a good idea of the main story points of the movie that many sites have shown.

No footage at D23.

“It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise. In the fall, there’ll be a trailer.” - JJ Abrams
