'Friday the 13th’ TV Series Announced

If it is going to be broadcast TV.... then I agree, CW is a good fit. They would be willing to take the most risks in terms of content.

CW Actively Developing “Friday the 13th” Series

Confirming reports from this past March, the CW is heading to Crystal Lake.

The network topper Mark Pedowitz today confirmed that the CW is developing “Friday 13th,” a drama series based on the long-running feature franchise, reports Deadline.

The series adaptation will be written by Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, creators of the 1996 NBC series “The Pretender” through CBS TV Studios.

“They are new in development,” Pedowitz said.

The Friday The 13th series project originated last year when Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films and Crystal Lake Entertainment sealed a deal to produce a new hourlong dramatic series based upon the characters and settings of the franchise, with Sean S. Cunningham, who helmed the 1980 original, executive producing along with EFO Films principals Randall Emmett & George Furla and Mark Canton, among others.

Bill Basso (Terminator) and Jordu Schell (Avatar) were tapped at the time to script a storyline that re-imagines Jason in multiple time periods. Details on the remake are sketchy but the idea had been to do a contemporary series focusing on the eclectic characters of Crystal Lake who are forced to confront the return of the killer, as new secrets about his wacky family are revealed. The masked Jason is being reimagined with a stronger feel of grounded reality.

Paramount is currently developing the new movie that would put David Bruckner behind the camera. Here’s the latest update on that project, set for release on May 13, 2016.

Cable would have been cool but CW is a good fit. They get away with a lot of gore in Supernatural, VD, Originals etc.

Not to mention CW casts tend to be quite attractive.

CW sounds like a pretty good fit. I can't wait to see what they do with this. Just finished watching all the Friday the 13th films (again) tonight. More Jason!!!!

Sean S. Cunningham Talks “Friday the 13th” TV Series and New Movie

We’ve been hearing about how CW is developing a “Friday the 13th” television series for a little while now. There are many people who have a lot of trepidations regarding this project, especially considering that it’s CW. If this were AMC, FX, or something like that, I bet people would feel a bit more at ease. However, the fact that it’s CW on the job doesn’t seem to bother series creator Sean S. Cunningham. In fact, he’s totally on board.

Speaking with Fangoria, Cunningham explains, “We went with CW because they are probably the most successful genre distributor in the world because they’re not only strong in this country but around the world with their other titles, in particular, “Arrow” and “The Flash”. They know that market and they know the audience. They’re very smart and very psyched about doing the project.”

Furthermore, Cunningham was asked about the next film taking place during winter and also the rumors of it being a found-footage film. “They’ve been talking about that, but that’s not going to happen. I think what’s different for sure is Paramount was hung up on trying to do the found footage, which most fans, including me, just thought it wasn’t right,” Cunningham explained. “They weren’t saying yes to anything that didn’t work but they couldn’t find anything that would work. So finally, last February they gave up on it and decided to go in a completely different way and now they’re in the process of once again finding a better way to make it.”

Cunningham will be an executive producer on the next Friday the 13th film. His role on the CW show is, as yet, unclear.

Very curious to see what they do with this, and I agree that CW seems like a good place for it. I was a huge Pretender fan, so the fact that Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle are involved excites me. (And likely explains the slowness of them continuing their rebooted Pretender book series.)
