Mademoiselle (1966, Tony Richardson). Jeanne Moreau stars a supressed and sociopathic school teacher, whose disturbing desires challenge the delicate equilibrium of her local community.

Watching Equus on my 65" C8. I've never seen the Twlight Time release but, judging from the caps. The BFI release does indeed look to be better saturated. Also a bit warmer.

Average video bit rate I'd say from my UB820 is 30/32 mbs.

On a side note. What must my neighbours think hearing it

I was wondering if Tongues Untied had been given a new release date yet and stumbled on a reply on twitter, looks like it has been pulled completely unfortunately:

“Hi, we were really looking forward to releasing Tongues Untied but unfortunately are unable to proceed due to contractual issues"

I was wondering what had happened to it. So either a new label is going to get it, or we won't see a release at all

Yes, I asked Ben Stoddart on the BFI DVD & Blu-ray group

Tongues Untied won’t be released by the BFI I’m afraid. The deal couldn’t be done and it’s been removed from all sites for pre-order.

we did everything we could to make it happen. But insurmountable hurdles sadly. I don’t see anyone else in the UK ever doing it if I’m honest.

it’s getting I US blu-ray I think, but I don’t know when.

Thank you, because you took the time to make this post, I looked it up and I will check out images and trailer.
I remember seeing this title, I found the artwork unappealing and quickly dismissed it (I know, don't judge a book by its cover, but when there are so many movies you need to make quick decisions sometimes).
Now I may purchase it.

Mademoiselle is among Tony's greatest achievements but, for some reason, it's never been recognized as such. It's very peculiar, has nothing to do with his free cinema works and it's a kinda unique oeuvre in his filmography. Jeanne is beyond marvelous in it (acting-wise, I mean!). The last great Richardson to me (and I'm not alone). After that, he basically lost it. I only hope this won't be from a dated master.

Anyone have any idea whether L'âge d'or has quietly gone OOP recently? It's not listed at the BFI shop and prices seem to have gone up elsewhere... Seriously kicking myself right now.

Rossellini's War Trilogy is still at £16 on Zavvi, which is an ok price, if you are a fan of neorealism. If you use the 12% discount code, you can get it to around £14 before shipping.

"The Good Die Young" is an absolutely fantastic film, a 50s crime saga that is every bit as engrossing as masterpieces like "The Killing" and "Asphalt Jungle" IMO. What makes this film different is the presence of three genuinely sympathetic characters at the center, led astray by psychotic playboy Laurence Harvey, who gives a performance that is equally hilarious, brilliant and sinister. Richard Basehart, John Ireland and Stanley Baker play the three men, all incredibly desperate, who are drawn into Harvey's web of criminality.

The entire cast is fantastic, as Joan Collins and Robert Morley also make appearances. Stealing the show is Gloria Grahame, leaning into her role as Ireland's philandering wife. She and Harvey provide the film's id, while every other character is conflicted and burdened with guilt, and both appear to be getting a great deal of enjoyment in their performances. Lewis Gilbert does a terrific job of helming the film, as he ties the multiple storylines together effortlessly. The film has four separate storylines that could exist as their own films, but Gilbert never strains to blend character arcs.

As I said, this is one of the best crime films of its era that has not received a lot of attention over the years. I can't recommend picking up the BD enough.

I got to know Lewis Gilbert during the promotion of Haunted, and he was always disappointed that because the film was financed by a major bank that they had to rewrite it so that they robbed the Post Office instead of a bank (they also had to switch the location from the US to the UK because they weren't willing to fund a US shoot where they couldn't keep a close eye on them)..

I second this, one of my favourite blind buys of this year so far, a brilliant British Noir/crime title, great performances all round, especially from Laurence Harvey.

I got the Rossellini/Bergman set in the mail a couple of days ago. Great set that I got at a ridiculously low price from Rarewaves. Couldn't help myself and grabbed The War Trilogy too today. 3000 copies doesn't sound like that much to me, but maybe it is.

You the limited edition of the War Trilogy? Because it has been rereleased since. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the discs are housed in a keepcase instead of in a digipack. And of course the rerelease is not numbered. The discs themselves are the same, and the booklet is also included.

The War Trilogy was cheaper from Zavvi, think from both places the standard set, but don't know for sure, got mine from Zavvi.

Recently watched Rome open city. For most of the film a fairly standard gritty war film, but the last 1/2 hr fully justifies being an example of"neorealism". There is quite a marked difference in acting ability between the stars like Anna Magnani, and extras, but think that part of the style too.

I don't know where you are based but it is showing as in stock with Simply Home Entertainment for £9.99 plus postage(£2.99 i think) although you can normally get 10% off with a code.
I have used them to get some BFI Flipside releases in the past and they sometimes take awhile to get hold of the stock(longest i had to wait was nearly three weeks) but they have always come through in the end.
