The copies were on sale yesterday at the physical BFI shop at the southbank (if that helps at all).

Haven't taken the plastic wrapper off my copy of the BFI Blu-ray of Cry of the City yet. I'd be interested to know if anyone here thinks the picture is horizontally stretched. There was an observation in the DVD Beaver review about it.

Just noticed the price for the Quay Brothers set has gone up to £14.99 at HMV, so if you still want this for £4 less pre-order it from Amazon!
Bargain for 2xBD-50 and a hefty booklet (and probably nice packaging too). Oh, and it will include almost every short the Quay's have ever made (essentially), plus Christopher Nolan's recent doc! |

Ousmane Sembene's 1966 film Black Girl (La Noire de...) is about a Senegalese girl that travels with a French family she worked for to their Riviera home with dreams of continuing as a chic nursemaid to their children. But she finds her position altered to that of a housemaid doing cooking and cleaning chores, almost never able to meet with the exotic country outside the confines of the apartment. There's nothing said here that's new, it's the age old examination of cultural alienation and colonial exploitation. Some of the character writing is also flat, especially for the white characters. But there is a spare elegance in the direction and editing, and a striking visual texture (it helps that lead actress Mbissine Thérèse Diop gives off a luminous aura in the film's effective B&W photography). Recommended.
BFI's blu-ray is sourced from a recently restored master from the original negative for the film and looks beautifully filmic in motion, with strong contrast and healthy grain field. The sound design is not expansive but very effective, especially the use of native African music. ![]() |

Cria Cuervos The Firm Penda's Fen Underground Nosferatu Black Girl Culloden/The War Game Tess Pasolini The Adventures of Prince Achmed The Belly of an Architect A Zed and Two Noughts Theorem The Valley More quite a few Flipsides, probably some others |

Fopp is running a new BFI promotion in store.
Majority of titles are £8 each (lots of flipside titles I haven't seen on shelves in ages), including some recent ones like Richard III, Symptoms and Farewell My Concubine. The two limited Rosselini boxsets are £20 each, as is the Otto Preminger. Pasolini boxset and Dreyer boxset are £30 and the Herzog one is £40. |
