Why is Yojimbo/Sanjuro 4k showing as sold out at hmv? It wasn't an LE. It just has that basic proviso of *FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet synonymous with standard editions.

Read that as “Nobody will be appearing in person “ which seemed a little odd

Probably just temporary, the same thing happens with some Arrow releases. Although I believe there was some talk recently about HMV needing to be reminded to restock certain titles.

Yeah, I wouldn't panic quite yet, Ben Stoddart is very helpful with near-OOP stuff and especially giving updates to the Kurosawa titles (most have sold far better than expected).

Do take those warnings with a pinch of salt sometimes though; he made it out to sound like the first Akerman set was going to disappear imminently, and it seems to now be in stock everywhere and no sign of it disappearing all of a sudden (probably just a bout of pre-orders, but will trickle out after release). Of course, I grabbed it in a fluster and hopefully won't regret it...I suppose I can always sell it on if I absolutely hate what I see (unlikely, but you never know).

PS: Cinema Rediscovered are screening a new restoration of Neil Jordan's Angel (1982), feels like the kind of film BFI would license from Film4 so keep your eyes peeled (if not, perhaps Indicator, but I don't know of a very recent Film4 deal with them). Also showing is Stephen Frears' My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and Sally Potter's The Gold Diggers (1983), so either/both may be getting an upgrade too.

The update from 6 weeks ago was:
Quote:
**Booklet update** Our Kurosawa re-releases including a booklet are selling fast.

Ikiru stock in the marketplace still has one, including those units available from the BFI Shop for £14.99! I had the listing edited but can assure you any units they have left inlude a booklet.

High and Low - stock now in warehouse is without a booklet so buy it now if you want a copy with one.

Stray Dog - 2nd pressing due into warehouse 25/02 won't have one, so again, purchasing very soon would be my advice.

Yojimbo & Sanjuro - the first pressing Blu-ray and UHD (booklet and slipcase) will go and probably pretty quickly....
So Stray Dog went from a new release on 27th Jan to a second pressing hitting the warehouse on 25th Feb, and I'd put money on that selling slower than Yojimbo/Sanjuro. High and Low already had second pressings on the shelves in the same timeframe. I'm assuming HMV got rinsed of their initial order and can't reorder until the second pressing lands, so if you want the booklet I'd hunt for something in stock now, in a few weeks you might have no idea if you're going to receive a 1st or 2nd pressing from any retailer.

Thanks. That's very helpful. If I miss out on booklets I tend to take my time but keep an eye out for a pre-owned with booklet in all the usual places. You can usually get something in decent condition as those interested in selling at a later date tend to look after their items. In the meantime I'm quite content with Criterion releases I have. BFI's Stray Dog I already picked up so Throne of Blood is the one I need to be quick about next month.

Do I remember correctly that BFI usually has a sale about this time of year? I'm ready to buy my 13 remaining Flipsides when that happens.

Did BFI really expect Kurosawa titles not to sell like hot rice balls?

Just got this email:
Quote:
Dear Customer

We are writing to let you know about a security issue involving the BFI Shop website. No other BFI websites or services have been affected.

What happened?

On Wednesday 1 April, we detected unauthorised access to the BFI Shop’s online payment page. Our investigation has since found that the individuals responsible may also have accessed the BFI Shop customer database.

We acted immediately to put additional security measures in place and took the BFI Shop website offline as a precaution. The site remains offline while we continue working closely with our external supplier and cybersecurity experts to ensure everything is secure before bringing it back online.

This issue is limited to the BFI Shop website, which sells DVDs, books and gifts. It does not affect the physical BFI Shop at BFI Southbank, which continues to operate as normal. All BFI Members have a BFI Shop account in order to access their discount.

What information was involved?

Our investigation is ongoing, but we believe that personal information entered on the BFI Shop payment page was accessed by unauthorised individuals. It’s also possible that the BFI Shop customer database was accessed. This includes names, contact details and, if you have made an online purchase through the BFI Shop, payment information.

Website affected:

shop.bfi.org.uk - our website selling DVDs, books and gifts
Examples of BFI websites NOT affected:

bfi.org.uk - our main website
whatson.bfi.org.uk - our cinema ticket booking site
player.bfi.org.uk - our BFI Player streaming service
While our investigation is ongoing, we believe it’s important to let you know now so you can take sensible precautions. The BFI Shop website is currently offline. However, if you use the same password on any other websites or platforms, we strongly recommend changing it as a precaution.

It's a bit worrying that it has taken them three days to tell customers.

Have those geniuses actually been storing unencrypted passwords instead of password hashes? Some transparency about that would be welcome.

Sounds like the main problem was that the shop site was compromised and someone managed to insert a script to capture input.

https://www.bfi.org.uk/your-shop-data

I'd be surprised if passwords were stored unencrypted but that doesn't mean they can't be brute forced if the database was accessed. As per the advice, if you use the same email/password combo on other sites, change it.

If they were able to capture payment info entered by people making orders that's bad; it would be helpful if they could be more precise about the timeframe during which this happened.

In any case, reputational damage like this can be difficult to overcome. I'm not sure how I will feel about using the shop if and when it comes back online.

Doest that go through Worldpay or whatever? If you dont use the same password everywhere and dont answer emails from Nigerian princes you should have nothing to worry about.

Hey,
I see Throne of Blood is getting a 4K upgrade (I noticed on Zavvi), has anyone seen that?
I'm curious about not only the transfer, but if it will have both sets of translations from the Criterion, one was more Shakespeare like and the other was a more straight Japanese to English translation.
