Most blu-rays are presented in their original aspect ratio, which is what you want as that was how they were released orginally. Do you prefer missing part of the image (half of someones arm for example) just so the picture can take up the entire screen?

This is the worst thread on this site. It needs to be closed because it fosters and nurtures comments like this that are the complete opposite of what blu-ray.com should be about.

NO if it bothers you that somebody else can have a different preference than you YOU need to leave the site it is attitudes like this that start fights.

ummm, no FORMAT fills up the tv. read up on aspect ratios. whether it be DVD or Blu ray the director chooses the aspect ratio of the movie. there are 3 or 4 different aspect ratios MOST commonly used and only ONE of those would fill up a widescreen tv. some will have black bars on the side, some on the bottom etc. you can't fit EVERY aspect ratio into your tv without some scaling. simple as that.

Really??? "the worst thread on this site"??? "It needs to be closed..."?

I wasn't aware that this thread/list was a flame/argumentative thread and not simply compiling a simple list of blurays specifically shown in a certain format (16:9).

If it's the "complete opposite of what blu-ray.com should be about," why does the website have a search function and/or filters in that search function? Why doesn't it just list ALL the blurays so you can't tell any sort of difference between them all but the high def of them?

I take pride in the list that I've compiled and all of those contributors that worked and put forth to add unto the list. Please, do not belittle them or the work they put in.

I do not condone, support, or even encourage ANY opinion whatsoever. This is just putting together a list that has specific specifications. What is said in the original post is basically just backstory of why this list was created.

Oh, god. This thread scared me for a bit. I thought it meant "full screen" like the DVD days. Like "Fish Tank" on blu-ray.

I thought this was going to be a thread on what BDs were altered to fit the screen.

While I think the OP is a bit silly I hardly think it should be closed. I guess it's not a bad thing to know what BDs 'fill the screen' but that would be the last consideration in showing a movie to friends. But to each his own...

When I first got my 50 inch plasma, I wanted only full screen movies, but a year later anything will do as long as it respects the original aspect ratio, but my preference now is for sure 2:35 types.

I have the 16:9 version of gladiator that leaked and it's not cropped, it's widened out. I know there's a thread showing it but I forgot where it is.

I think it looks much better in 16:9 and that 'artist intent' when they chop it off for the heck of it, almost always looks too zoomed in for my taste. I like to flame 2.35:1 purists though so take my post with a grain of salt. The fact that so many people get so enraged over topics like this is silly.

found the thread. Will hold onto and cherish my 16:9 leak of the movie.

Some people love the art that is cinematography and don't want it conformed to meet the wishes of the "non hipsters". That's the difference between movie lovers and people who love to watch movies.

is it because it is unacceptable to you that other people's opinion are different than yours?

I read this on a forum, and think it's appropriate. Forgive me but I do not know who originally wrote it.

" The consumer isn't the creator of the art, therefore they have no say in how it should be viewed. That's up to the artist. Comsumers buy frames to fit the art, not chop up the art to fit a certain frame they like. Same goes with cinema."

This is my take on aspect ratio. A film should always be viewed in the aspect ratio the director and cinematographer intended it to be filmed in, because it was filmed that way for a purpose. Lawrence of Arabia's very wide aspect adds to the scope and emptiness and vast expanse of the Arabian desert. To zoom it in or chop part of the picture off to fill the screen would do a disservice to the film and the director and cinematographer's intent.

This is just food for thought, and in no way an attack or slight towards the opinions of those in this thread. I myself like certain films to be shot in a format that fills my screen. Cartoons and animated features should always be 1:85 imo.

i partly agree but i wouldn't delve into details as to why anymore.

i just want to make it known that this thread compiles a list of 16:9 movies so people who prefer that kind of AR would have a reference.

if the thread doesn't serve a purpose to you, IGNORE it. hipsters and film snobs need to chill and mind their own business. it's just a list for christ's sake.

I don't think anyone has a problem with others preferring it until we see stupid comments like the 1 below pop up in these forums, especially the part in bold.

I'm not a film snob and I don't even know what a hipster is. I just don't go anal over black bars. I understand the purpose of this thread. I'm simply conversating. If your post wasn't towards me ignore this post.

I think what you say is true, but more for comments made below by eco10530. I still take exception to what he says...
If anything, through your logic, he didn't have to go and try and torpedo my list/this whole thread like that...

I am actually a bit like you. Buying outside of the 1.85:1 displayed aspect ratio wasn't really that big of a deal and didn't stop me from purchasing and enjoying blurays. And a around a year after my original post and blurays becoming more mainstream, moreso. The only difference between us being that I still really like seeing the movie in a fullscreen 16x9. It's a nice surprise and I enjoy it even more. Simple as that.
