Oh, great. Now every movie with a bit of crushed shadow detail is faulty. See, I don't mind it when actual problems are brought to light, but the inevitable side effect is that people start seeing the DNR/black crush/latest buzz word everywhere.
I saw Ghostbusters on a 2K DCP and I can assure you the gamma was far more in keeping with the new 4K transfer than the horribly contrasty original Blu-ray. But now it looks like "crap". Whatever. |

Remember that the SONY discs affected don't have crushed-blacks because of poor mastering they have it due to the incorrect RGB level been encoded, it's 16-235 and not 0-255. The crushed-blacks are just a bi-product. If Ghostbusters was affected, it would look like this:
Full 0-255 Blu-ray Top - Limited 16-235 Blu-ray Bottom ![]() ![]() Full 0-255 Blu-ray Top - Limited 16-235 Blu-ray Bottom ![]() ![]() Full 0-255 Blu-ray Top - Limited 16-235 Blu-ray Bottom ![]() ![]() I don't think we need to start seeing the boogeymen in the shadows (or the lack of them) with every other SONY release. If SONY use the same master in two regions and then there's a difference, then red flags should be waved, but comparing two different transfers from two different masters isn't the best way to judge! |

It's tempting. I think I own only one or two Sony BDs. |

The MI4K version of Ghostbusters does not have black crush. The original 2K release and even the most recent DVD had contrast boosting. When you compare them to the MI4 release one would think it has black crush, but of course it does not.

Doesn't mean you were intended to see it. The other movies in this thread have been affected by a quantifiable problem, that of a double application of the video level conversion from PC levels, whereas applying the same conversion to Ghostbusters does not result in the same level of crush. That implies that it's a genuine grading decision - the higher gamma helping to hide the seams better in the VFX shots - and as such is simply an aesthetic concern. Lumping it in with the properly affected titles is disingenuous to say the least.
