Personally I thought this movie was gonna do okay business but not amazeballs simply because Tom Crooze minus Mission Impossible usually equals meh box office, it's incredible when you think that he'd never had a $100M opening weekend to his name before. But it's been hyped up as a cinematic event first and foremost, a thrill ride that only theatres can deliver in this post-pandemic world, and it's that rare beast of a movie that actually lives up to the hype which is why it's got the legs that it has. The Top Gun nostalgia is the cherry on top.
Yeah I'd agree its quality is the main reason why its doing so well but I think tied to that you have different kinds of nostalgia as well.

The Jurassic World and Starwars sequels brand of nostalgia really I think its more making as many references to the original films as possible but not actually being very similar to them in style/tone. TGM on the other hand does geuinely feel like Top Gun, somewhat updated for the time but really in an era of 80's nostalgia generally the match is pretty good.

Maybe you could add as well a bit of the "Cameron formula" as well? its more of an action film than the original but I think it does still have more of a romantic drama appeal than a lot of blockbusters do.

Maverick's nostalgia works better than most because it doesn't jerk off in romanticizing it. It says it's Top Gun and does Top Gun stuff but it's a lot more than just bringing up nostalgic feelings.

Top Gun literally remakes the first scene. After that the call backs are plot driven rather than 'hey look, remember when we did this'. I rather a film stand on its own two feet but if you are going to have callbacks that's the way to do it.

Again I think the difference is that it actually feels like Top Gun as appose to just making references to it.

In Rogue One the two characters from the canteen scene in Star Wars just stroll by. Not part of the plot and absolutely no reason for them to be there. That is the sort of callback I hate. I prefer callbacks to either be in the background that you have to pause the movie on home-viewing to catch or a callback that is plot motivated.

When I heard the opening titles, I already got emotional and chills. This was my dream version of the film in my head and it was happening before my eyes. Great old school blockbuster entertainment.

How did this sound to you? To me it sounded very average, like the Atmos on the original.
To think that was the film that sold most Dolby Surround/DPL setups.

Enjoyed the new one though, better than the first.

I feel like this new film is better than the first because this new film is exactly the same movie, just with the climactic conflict setup from the get go instead of randomly sprung on us at the end of the movie.

I mean, I really enjoyed myself with this new film, but it also kills off any criticism people have about legacy sequels having no worth due to simply retreading old ground or baiting viewers with nostalgia, because that's literally all this movie is.

Loved the film, seen it twice. Enjoy the YouTube interviews with actual Top Gun pilots who think the film is awesome. Joseph Kozinski did very well with this. Timing is interesting for Mr Tom, he's got Mission Impossible next month. Look forward to that too.

Yeah, a fair point. One difference here is that while the movie did play on nostalgia, it also did NOT do some things that tend to happen in sequels made recently. It left out unnecessary changes, didn’t add things that didn’t need to be there and didn’t change characters out of the blue. In other words, you can milk the nostalgia but you have to do it right. Kosinski and Cruise did. Most don’t.

Well it didn't...do anything, really.

The film opens with the same montage followed by meeting Maverick who's the same character, wearing the same clothes, the literal same jacket, living in the same town, riding the same bike. He's "punished" for breaking the rules by a general in the same way at the original by being sent to the same flight school, where he follows a similar love interest. The film opens the same with the same music, the same song is sung at the piano by a member of the same family, they have a sports montage on the same sun kissed beach. thirty years later Maverick feels the same regret he feels at the end of the first movie (which he was supposed to have begun to heal from at the end of that movie). The flight school has the same rivalries and then later Maverick goes through the same crisis of confidence, gets advice from his love interest in the same way before overcoming this crisis just in time to be part of a similar (but more dramatic) last act conflict.

It's aaaaaaaaaaaaall the saaaaaaaaaame.

If you want to be technical, Terminator and T2 are basically the same movie. Rocky and Creed are basically the same movie. The beats are the same but the execution is different.
