If your home theater is capable, go with the truest format with which the Director intended to tell his story, i.e. the 3D version.

In the grand scheme of things, in this case (Hugo), the individual strengths and weaknesses of certain types of displays in regards to ghosting is of secondary importance as compared to the 3D content itself, as two very notable research scientists mention -

And the 3D content is very good

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...go#post5460568

as the home version reflects the theatrical version, just on a smaller scale.

Just watched it and it's AMAZING!! I saw it in a REEL D 3D theater a few months ago and fell in love with this movie! Won't be for everyone, but for those of us who love good 3D, its a must buy.

For starters it's 16x9 aspect ratio, completely filling the screen and giving a more immersive felling. It just won an Oscar for best Cinematography, and you can see why, it's incredibly dimensional lighting, with strong colors, bright edge lighting and deep dark blacks! This all only adds to the 3 dimensional feeling of it. The colors are deep and rich. Sharpness and clarity are a wonder to behold, even with the 3D glasses on.

The 3D was shot natively and it shows! Each shot has a deep dimensionality to it. It many movies, the depth starts at the screen and goes deep with a few parts popping forward out of the screen "plane". This movie has the screen plane set back in the shots, so quite alot of it is taking place FORWARD of the screen plane! In other words, faces, objects etc. start already popped out of the screen and then the depth reaches way back into the screen from there! The result is THE most immersive experience I have had yet watching 3D blu ray! It all adds up to an amazing viewing experience.

That said, I'm watching on a new Epson 5010 front screen projector and I sit about 10 feet away from it! This projector is AMAZING and for the price ($2500 USD) can't be beat. I rarely ever see any ghosting, though I will say I did see some viewing this disc. Its very minor on my set up, and could be because much of this movie takes place in such a wide and deep canvas, with very contrasted lighting. I could only say I saw it in a very few face edges and only for a few seconds, I was also looking hard for it. Its a minor trade off for such an incredible 3D presentation!

If there is any way to see this in 3D, you should! I have AVATAR and TANGLED, HTTYD, Kung Fu Pandas, etc...and this beats them all in my book, not by alot but for the overall shot by shot depth, it has no equal for a live action movie!

Can't recommend the quality of this disc enough! As I also have a deep love for cinema, the story is great IMHO as well.

Just viewed Hugo 3D with my HMD, Sony model HMZ-T1.

Have to verify that there is absolutely no ghosting of the image when using an HMD and it makes Hugo 3D the most real-to-life stereoscopic movie I've ever experienced. The comparison of viewing Hugo 3D in the theater in RealD 3D and then on Blu-ray 3D at home seems very different. The spatial dimension and physical reactions I get at home are much greater than I experienced in the theater, producing motion reflexes I didn't notice before. I think its because the 3D camera is "illusion-ally" taking my body all over the place. Up in the air, through crevices and around corners in an instant. It's like turning your head to view something but in life, you have a body that has to go along; you're not just a free spirit and it makes the movie exhilarating by allowing you to watch reality in only spirit form. Hope my experience is making sense. Also, with the HMD the 3D planes show depth differently than when two images are on a screen. Images don't stand out in front of the screen, behind the screen or anywhere with reference, because there is no external landmarks like theater chairs or home furniture giving the eyes reference points. You just feel you are really there viewing the action.

Next I will try this on my 65" Panasonic VT25 for another comparison.

Paul

Now if only the person that actually reviewed it could have posted a review even half as good as yours.

I'm looking forward to watching this tonight. Just as a quick rant, I hate stickers. My copy of Hugo from BB had three stickers on the cover. Three. The BB sticker came off easy, but the factory stickers were a little more stubborn. I got them off ok, but one left a bit of residue that I had to rub off. I really wish they'd lose the $@&!ing stickers. End rant.

So, you indeed got one…http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...rtNumber=HMZT1

I presume you feel it was a worthwhile purchase, especially given the price point.

‘Lighting’ by a man who needs little introduction to cinephiles, but just in case, his resume –

‘Colors’ by Greg Fisher(under the guidance of R.R., of course) who did the on-set as well as the final grade on a Baselight (next to the last paragraph…

using Truelight Profiles and LUTs.

So, is it worth the nearly $30 price? Thinking about picking this up tomorrow.

I think it is. It was my favourite film of last year though and also has probably the best 3d photography I have seen.

After seeing all the rave reviews I'm thinking James Cameron and Scorsese knew what they were doing when they released their premier 3D movies in a 1:85 aspect ratio

I hope we see more directors do this for movies created primarily to be viewed in 3D. As for movies where 3D is just a tacked on "accessory" I'm sure we'll continue to see more of them in 2:35 ratio than 1:85. I'm all for OAR, as long as its not 2:35 (in the case of 3D movies)

Why? I love 2:35:1 (I'm really happy Peter Jackson's maintaining continuity with LotR's aspect ratio on the Hobbit films). It's gives films so much more of an epic scale.
