In the movie Gladiator, why did Proximo ask Maximus if he wanted a girl ... then ask if he wanted a boy instead? I never understood the meaning of that.

back then the romans and greeks often had boy sex slaves. it was not uncommon i think for someone to be gay. since maximus said he didnt want a girl, naturally he was asked if he wanted a boy instead.

No. no. no. There were no gays back then. Gay stuff only started in the 70s after The Village People came out with that hit song YMCA.

Maybe Proximo was offering Maximus what would be the equivalent of a maid (girl) or butler (boy). You know, a personal assistant to cook his food and wash his clothes - stuff like that. I guess it was a reward for Maximus for bringing more wealth to Proximo by winning the gladiator events. But the weird thing is that Maximus was Proximo's slave. so why would Prox give Max a slave of his own?

Proximo wasn't giving Maximus a slave, he was rewarding him with some "entertainment" for the night with a girl or boy.

A girl or a boy? Wow. I thought it was bad enough that Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) wanted to have sex with his sister Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). I am glad that Maximus didn't accept Proximo's offer (or should I call him "Proxhomo?")

Lucilla was implicated in plots with members of the senate to kill her brother. In 182, following an assassination attempt, Lucilla was exiled to Capri and later executed on Commodus's orders. Later Commodus was assassination by a Roman athlete, Narcissus.

A lot of Germanic tribes did migrating into Gaul, Italy and Hispania. When Rome expanded into the Rhine and Danube rivers, it incorporated many Celtic societies into the Empire.
