I think the VFX still look phenomenal. The shading and bug movement looks organic and has a gravity to it that something relatively contemporaneous like the creature in the Lost in Space film around that time does not. The only component imo that shows its age is the compositing of the CG with live action photography. As an industry, that has progressed by leaps and bounds in the past couple decades.

But, in a nutshell, I still think the bugs look photorealistic.

There's usually more dust on my player than there is grain in every release these dudes call a sandstorm. It's impossible to take them seriously or believe them about anything.

Ugh. Those screenshots look horrible. How can anyone enjoy that garbage? Now I'm definitely glad I canceled. The DVD probably looks better.

The UHD of a film that was shot on film is supposed to look like projected film, not HD video.

Let me ask you: do you think an old woman who gets botox and a facelift, who gets scrubbed of all her wrinkles and droopiness and bags under her eyes, and has that artificially smoothed, waxy, "I can't move my face" look, do you think she looks good? Because you're saying that she does.

Are we sure this features a new 4K master from OCN? Doesn't look that good compared to other Sony titles that are usually stellar quality

There's a big difference between having a little natural grain and the complete garbage in the screenshots above. There's no excuse for it to look that bad.

No, I think they need to clean it up. Plenty of movies have grain. Most of them don't look anywhere near that bad. Whether they used a shitty filming method or whatever, no 90s movie should look that bad. It's only 20 years old, and the Dirty Harry movies from the 60s look better FFS!

I was thinking about this. Titles like Leon, Dracula, Bridge on the River Kwai had already been released with 4K scans on Blu-ray. Close Encounters was advertised as having a new 4K scan being done. Sony has been sitting on a 4K scan of A Few Good Men for over a year now.

However prior to this UHD announcement I've never heard of Starship Troopers being done in 4K or in the Pipeline. Anyone correct me if im wrong here. Is it possible Sony had a Universal Bourne Identity moment here? Just pump up HDR on an existing outdated master?

I'm curious to see how other posters experience pan out. I'm aware that depending on individuals and/or TV sets milage can very. Every title as I have read has its praisers and detractors.

There's this one from a few pages back too.

Could not believe the amount of detail revealed in this transfer. Colors are superb and lighting is quite natural, HDR is very well implemented. Despite it's age, cgi holds up pretty well. Audio is impressive too. Seriously, this disc is stellar and an upgrade in every possible way.

Sadly, the regular BD is the same as the old release. It's clearly not from the same master as the UHD since the color grading is quite different and it has a lot of imperfections. It even has the Marauder trailer attached to it.

Crappy pics that don't really show how great the picture quality is:

Those screenshots look a lot better. Could it be a settings issue of ncraft?

you need to turn the red down on your display... or your phone just takes bad pics..

The caps just above look correct, as opposed to yours. The caps above are more of what the disc looks like.

As for the 'grain' police... are you familiar with film?? There is supposed to be grain in this older film, its not shot on a RED camera.

You know it says "all-new 4K restoration" on the back cover, right? This movie is going to have grain, and plenty of it, so anyone ranting about that and how "bad" this UHD apparently looks because of it (and some gammy photos) is barking up the wrong tree.

Exactly, also all those other titles you mentioned are Sony worldwide. Starship Troopers is a Disney title outside US and Canada, maybe they didn't have access to a better source...

Nonsense. Sony made the movie, not Disney. They only distribute it outside the US.

I thought TriStar (Sony) and Touchstone (Disney) were both production companies for this movie...

Is this wrong?

I don't know that. Haven't seen the title in my local stores yet. This website or Amazon haven't put up a pic of the back cover for me to read. Only thing I had to go on was the official press release. And nowhere did it state "New Restoration." Just stated "All New 4K Blu-ray with Atmos." And we all know how word play goes.

That's why I'm curious for more feedback and more posters experience.
