Even with the cult following this steel book shouldn't be too hard to score on Tuesday in store.

I'm about an hour into watching this. While I still enjoy this movie, the transfer is about as bad a transfer as I've seen on this format. Good use of HDR, but the colors are just off. The movie is incredibly soft looking, and the amount of film grain borders on the level of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in some scenes. Best way to describe the transfer would be a sci-fi 3:10 to Yuma. Incredibly disappointing.

Very disappointing to hear. I was trying to hold out on buying any more movies since black friday is somewhat close. But 5min before reading this, I bought it since it had the $5 offer.

got my copy, i havent seen anyone post pictures of what the back looks like. There is no inner artwork. As far as the transfer goes, my god the HDR is aggressive. I get the feeling it was an automatic process nor the DP or Paul was involved in it. I had to double check my setting to see if "dynamic contrast" was on, when it wasn't. The grain is really heavy, but not distracting. I've heard one reviewer talk about how dated the special effects look, but they hold up very well in my opinion. Even the worst offending scenes like tanker/brain bug. I've only bought two bestbuy steelbooks, this one and alien:convenant. Are they all this cheaply made? has same issue alien:convenant had, mis-aligned steelbook that doesnt snap properly. Not as bad as my alien convenant steelbook but def noticeable. no more bestbuy steelbooks for me.

People complain about grain so much I'm afraid we will return in the era of early blu-rays with movies smeared into shit.

I wasn't complaining about grain, I liked it. The detail is definitely worth the purchase alone, but I switched back to my UK (edit error/DNR free) blu ray copy after watching UHD disc, and i preferred the blu ray. Alot of the original intended cinematography gets destroyed in the HDR version.

The second half of the movie is slightly better than the first, but still extremely bad. The worst thing about the transfer is the colors. Everything just seems off, for lack of a better term. I love film grain, with Blade Runner Final Cut and Ghostbusters(1984) among my favorite transfers. But in some scenes it just becomes unwatchable, making me think it's noise rather than grain. Like I mentioned before, think of 3:10 to Yuma, in terms of quality. Even the Lincoln Lawyer 4K was more consistently good than this, and that movie was all over the place in terms of quality.

I've been noticing some complaints about grain here and there in regards to 4K content as well. Can't believe it's still a point of contention with some in 2017.

Seeing movies like Black Swan or Robocop and the way they were filmed, how can you get rid of grain and not damage the intended/natural look?

On the other hand, UHD doesn't instantly mean it's a 100% ultimate version of the film. Maybe they didn't bother much indeed with UHD versions ST and Yuma (I don't own either) and they ended up looking unsatisfying.

Can someone that has purchased the disc post a comparison or screenshot of your 4K disc? Because of what I am reading here, I've decided not to preorder and almost wonder if this is why we haven't read any legit reviews for this thing.

It's worth noting, however, that Starship Troopers was always quite grainy and not exactly the prettiest film.

While I expect there to be a healthy layer of grain (I'm a grain lover), I'm kind of worried about the other things a couple of people mentioned here. I really hope this is caused as a result of a TV setting issue. Sony has a reputation to think of regarding these 4K catalogue releases...

It's not a point of contention with me. I expect there to be grain on every transfer of a movie shot on film. It's part of what makes those transfers and those movies special. IMO Starship Troopers gets negatively affected, just like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 4K. The difference though is that Crouching Tiger didn't have any other issues. It was a great transfer overall. Starship Troopers is just flawed color wise. It's sad because it's still a really enjoyable movie that should have been given a better treatment.

I'm not worried about grain in the slightest. I am 100% on board with preserving a motion pictures original look. What I am worried about with this release is what I keep reading about the HDR..if it does in fact radically change the look of the film, that's troublesome. Just because you can enhance something with HDR doesn't mean you should.

Yeah. I'll wait and see for myself, but it could be problematic. HDR can go overboard... but here's hoping for the best.

Some of us don't pay good money to watch a goddamn sand storm. If it's too noisy/grainy, it pisses people off. You guys are the only purists that give a damn about the film look. Typical consumers buy HD because they want a clear, pretty picture.

Well, I hate grain, so I just canceled my order. I'm glad somebody got the damn thing early and posted about this. Screenshots would've been nice though.
