That's not smart thinking.
If they remaster 1080p blurays and include it with the 4K version they'll get people like me to buy it for the 1080p while having the 4K for when the eventual 4K TV purchase is made. That's what i was going to do with Blade Runner until i found out it had the same 2007 bluray. They lost a sale from me. Buy leaving a dated master as is and only focusing on 4K they're making 1080p owners feel ignored which means less 4K sales. EDIT- For the record......Bluray and UHD Bluray are part of the same family. The names should give you a hint. Comparisons keep being made with DVD and bluray and those arguments are flawed. Alot of remasters wouldn't even be worth it for DVD. Not so with bluray. Last edited by saprano; 09-30-2017 at 09:36 PM. |

Blade Runner is the same 4K master but it's 10 years old and was limited by HDDVD. It's not the best it could look. Lost sale is a lost sale. Used or not. Last edited by saprano; 09-30-2017 at 11:36 PM. |

But one thing I'll say is DVD has a reason to be retired - it doesn't hold up well on today's TVs. That's not true of blu-ray. Blu-rays still look incredible on my 55" UHD set. So I don't think they should be punishing people who have upgraded to blu-ray but not yet to UHD. That would just be hurting further physical sales. Do we really want that? If they try to force people into a format they just aren't interested in, they will just lose more physical media supporters. I'm 47 and thankfully my eyes are still capable of seeing the improvement of UHD over standard blu-ray, but I bet by the time I'm in my 60's I won't care about the new "16k" format they'll be trying to push, not because it might not be "better", but because my eyes literally won't care at that point. Many people already feel 1080p offers quality high enough that they are happy with what they have without buying into another format. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be getting the new remasters or new releases on blu-ray. Blu-ray is still a very capable and valid format. They should not be ignoring it now just to try and boost another format. |

So people who stick with blu-ray should get stuck with older masters of big Hollywood movies for no reason other than as a punishment for not going UHD, while smaller studios like Arrow give us wonderful new 4k masters on blu-ray of 80's horror films? How does that make any sense? There is zero reason for not releasing newer 4k masters on blu-ray.

UHD supporters already get exclusive benefits - 4k resolution , HDR, and an expanded color palette. That's plenty of reasons to upgrade for those who want the very best image quality possible. People shouldn't have to watch old dated masters on a high-quality format like blu-ray "just because". The newest masters should be available on both blu-ray and UHD. If not, they risk alienating even more people who currently support physical media. In their quest to push more people towards UHD, they may instead push them towards streaming instead. That will hurt all of us who support physical media. |

I sound like a broken record but the lack of a standalone 20th anni Blu-ray is the REAL mystery here. I can only think that, between the UHDs of Traitor of Mars and the movie proper plus the BD release of Traitor, they thought that an anniversary BD for the movie might get a bit lost in the shuffle. OR they spent too much money on that crap light up box for CE3K and they had to sacrifice something somewhere. ![]() |

Is Arrow releasing those 4K masters onto UHD? Again, it would be different if Sony had released a standalone remastered Blu and kept the original disc inside the UHD. |
