It's a satire. It's very funny in a specific, intelligent way.

Even if you're not reading into it or don't agree with that angle, it still has a great poker face. In that regard, it's a really well done, fun, campy sci-fi monster war movie.

It's the kind of movie that, when it shows up on cable, you just sit and watch it. That's as good as it gets.

I don't recall people complaining when an Anniversary remastered Blu came out that there wasn't a corresponding new DVD.
That's a silly argument though because a DVD is in no way capable of offering any visual improvements from a 4k master. The resolution just isn't high enough. Blu-ray can offer a significant improvement by using a newer 4k scan.

DVDs benefited from new masters too, absolutely. A lot of early DVDs were laserdisc ports that got remasters later.

I do agree it's somewhat odd there's no standard BD version of this or The Mummy. They could have at least done the Unforgiven thing of keeping it exclusive to the combo-pack, which would help drive sales of the new format. I guess their marketing metrics decided it wasn't worth the trouble though.

BF is just around the corner and am almost certain that this and several other catalog titles will see a nice price drop. If you ask me though, Starship's a classic along with the great UHD PQ that it's been given makes it totally worth getting now at $20, imo.

This release was a real shocker - Incredible for such an old movie, especially one that wasn't a huge major blockbuster. Looked fantastic, vivid, bright, deep - SERIOUSLY doubt anyone is going to complain about it being dim (which was a bit of a shocker as much of what I've watched in HDR recently has been just incredibly dim looking). And grain wasn't that bad either - I expected much worse based on some comments I've read, after at all this WAS shot on film. Sure it doesn't look as sharp or crisp as some stuff shot on 8K HDR native digital cameras, but for a movie shot on film, I can't imagine it looking any better and is proof that film can look better than alot of digital movies in UHD.

Which makes it all the more weird when I plugged in Traitor of Mars afterwards with Dolby Vision support and it looked like complete and utter trash in comparison, really dim and dull and unbelievably awful. Was so jarring after watching this immediately before hand.

So, they are just doing that to try and get people to upgrade, not cool. I have zero interest in 4K Blu-ray, especially since most are just 2K upscales and not every film resolves 4K of resolution anyways even with a proper 4K remaster.

There is nothing wrong with 2K upscales. Some of the best looking movies that have been released so far are 2K upscales. Don't knock it until you try it.

Agreed. I scanned through the 4K version yesterday and was very impressed with it. Sure there's grain and some soft images (long shot of Carmen on the bridge of the Rodger Young as an example) but overall it's an excellent transfer.

Well, if you're not interested in the best possible presentation of a film why are you complaining then (or in this thread for that matter)?

It's already been mentioned but better compression, better color, HDR make even 2K upscales easily look superior. Not to mention a lot of releases have Atmos audio tracks exclusively.

There are a few shots in "Traitor of Mars" that look utterly beautiful in 4K, but yeah, its definitely not a strong 4K transfer compared to its older sibling.

Because I thought the standard Blu-ray would get the same 4K Master as well.

Its just lame as hell that these Studios are holding onto new Masters for their 4K Blu-rays only now.

Ignorance is bliss. Perhaps you should at least educate yourself a bit before assuming “most” are 2k upscales. Sure there are 2k upscale, but most look fantastic and there is definitely more detail and better colors vs their BD counterparts. Also, might want to look here...RealorFake4k

There are a number of 2K upscales, for sure... not that that makes those releases a lesser product. Not in the least. It's the source itself that the studio uses that we have to worry about.

Well, is it not true that a good majority are 2K upscales, or are you saying the majority are true 4K?

They're in the business of selling the newest brightest baubles.
They want you to buy the 4K disk, new tv, new player.
Marketing & sales is the name of the game.

Not saying everyone likes it or can afford it. But that's the way the cookie crumbles...
