Haven't picked up Kwai yet but this was the biggest improvement yet for me from a catalogue title. The contrast with HDR was gorgeous.

This disc just laughs at any attempts at using noise reduction. I love it.
Checked out the BD, as this is the first time I've owned a copy of the US disc. Not Sony's finest hour, that one. |

To my eyes, this disc looks way too bright and harsh. Faces look a bit pale.
There's highlights everywhere, coming off just the shine on people's faces. I haven't seen this problem before because most UHDs run a bit darker. My contrast and OLED Light are set at 100 (which I think is correct). Didn't want to alter my global settings on LG TV, so I used a configurable video pre-set on X800 to make some adjustments: Brightness -3, Contrast -1, Color +2 That took out the harshness and helped the skin tones for me. |

If Contrast is set to 100 then try setting OLED Light to 30 and work up until the image appears overall balanced. Also Dynamic Contrast is recommended to be set to Low for HDR with 2017 LG Oleds in order to enable Active HDR. |

Someone with an OLED mentioned the exact same thing at AVF. The movie has a very bright look so if the tone mapping is having to junk those highlights then it will look overly lit and blown out, whereas it looks superb on my ZD9 - not that the outdoor scenes in particular aren't plenty bright because they are, but they're not uncomfortably harsh and the highlights look terrific. I think Contrast and OLED Light were at 100 to begin with... I can reset the pre-set to be sure, but I thought the whole point of HDR was to have those two at MAX. |

I used that certificate to then make a purchase that included Starship Troopers during the same promotion. Again, I am not sure if I was ever issued a certificate for that purchase or not, or if I am even eligible for the rewards since I used a certificate towards the purchase. Sigh... do I really want to fuss for this over the phone or not? haha. Does Best Buy have a good email to use? |

Just finished watching. What a beautiful disc, bright and colorful, Atmos is amazing as well. Watching it after a while, forgot how much fun this movie was. Yes it was a grainy but nothing distracting for me. In fact imo Bram Stoker Dracula's grain was a bit more distracting.

I don't know, maybe: -Declining physical media sales = insufficient return on investment of pressing a new 1080p, at least as far as sales of reissued catalog titles like 'Troopers are concerned. -They're hoping UHD exclusivity of remasters will drive sales of the new format. -As many UHD adherents are finding with the likes of Bram Stoker's Dracula, the remastered 1080p disks look so good, they kneecap the UHD by comparison. Including older blus, studios imply that the qualities of the re-master itself will be attributed to the UHD/4K disc, when most would be perceptible on a Mi4k 1080 blu version, too. However you slice it, not exactly a win for HD media consumers. .. Last edited by AllOuttaBubbleGum; 10-16-2017 at 05:17 AM. |

I dunno about that third point there, but some combination of the first two is likely the case. Though they did package a remastered blu in for Close Encounters, so it might just be a random disc author's decision about what they want to bother doing.

The only thing I have lowered is the brightness. No harm in actually trying it out. Other people (or calibrated) preferences don’t have to be yours. |

It doesn't make sense to me to include two formats in a package, and have one of those two discs be new but the second disc be old. And in this case not just old, but NINE years old! Desperately in need of the newly remastered version. Meanwhile with other titles you have constant reissues - for a while there, you had Sony releasing a bunch of Blu-rays "Mastered in 4K" or whatever that marketing was - because the studios are so eager to get the latest, best-looking and improved versions of their films to market (their motivations to drive sales by getting folks to double dip aside). I'll never condemn a double dip for a new master that's an improvement from the previous. Close Encounters makes sense to me, and as a not-yet-4K consumer who is preparing for the future but still enjoying Blu-ray for now, that's what I expected/hoped would be the case here too ![]() |
