Sadly, we're nearing the end of Sony's lovingly handled 4K catalogue offerings, as they have sold their restoration/remastering business and passed the digital buck on to someone else, but they still have a few more they are holding in reserve for next year's TV and player offerings. Future Sony 4K TVs are going to be using the multi-format HDR chips that are now available, so Dolby Vision support won't be an issue and all the current titles will work just fine too.

Sony has exited the digital media business as part of their restructuring. They are currently in the process of shutting down their disc replication facilities.

Well can only hope that the new owner understands the respect Sony has got for 4K releases. They are in the technology lead in the business and should be treated as such so we continue to get quality releases. Quality in this regard is what matters for the format and others formats also as benchmark.

Hopefully the new owners leave the sharpness dial alone.

Well, they sold their business to Deluxe and Deluxe US is doing well, it seems. Deluxe UK shuttered it's restoration business due to lack of business and heavy competition from others. In a show of French solidarity, StudioCanal switched all of their business from Deluxe to Eclair, which was the final nail in the coffin, as Deluxe UK was doing a lot of work for Canal's 4K catalogue titles.

Dudes, look at the date of the article: Sony sold Colorworks to Deluxe almost four years ago, before UHD even came to market, and just look at the goodness they've been putting out like clockwork since then. Forget the FUD, for nothing has changed in terms of Sony wanting to do right by their content and nothing will change as long as Grover Crisp is in charge of their asset management. They didn't always do everything on-site in LA anyway, they've often used Cineric in New York for transfer and restoration services.

Jeez, even when they use the services of known hacks like L'Immagine Ritrovita they still end up with obscenely gorgeous remasters like that done for A Matter of Life and Death because Sony know what they're doing. They let Ritrovita do the donkey work of restoration on AMOLAD because three-strip Technicolour negatives means 3x as much restoration work, PLUS however long it takes to precisely realign the colour records owing to differential fading/warping on each negative. But Sony made damned sure to grade the movie on their turf and the results are plain to see.

[edit]

While I believe it's true that the former Colorworks facilities that Deluxe took over on the Sony lot in Culver City have indeed recently been shuttered - I'm sure I heard that last year's CE3K remaster was one of the last Sony titles done on the lot - we don't have anything to fear as long as the right people are in charge. It's not the specific tech on a specific lot that matters, what matters is how it's used.

So the same Sony that couldn't care less about disc is the same Sony that, according to you, has been beavering away on getting 128GB quad-layer disc to work? How's that?

Didn't realize the sky fell 4 years ago. I guess all these amazing UHDs I own are fake.

So I upgraded my TV from a 8-bit fake HDR LED to a proper 10-bit OLED and naturally this was the first disc I checked out and naturally my mind has been blown all over again.

That should come as no surprise but it goes to show the strength of this UHD that even on a crappy panel I couldn't have imagined it looking any better.

This was one of the first UHDs I bought and it's reference quality. Like every shot you're blown away with how amazing it looks.

I am actually not as keen as others on this. Maybe it just meant to be that way, but it looks all hot and contrasty - nuke your eyeballs.
