Given this was made either before D.I. existed or were uncommon I wonder what elements they used for a 4K remaster. I guess they use the first generation print where all the CGI was added? Would that be the Answer print?

The final CG shots were recorded out to 35mm and cut directly into the camera original to form one unified 35mm negative. This was standard practice for digital VFX pre-DI. One presumes that the new transfer will have been derived from this original negative.

Oh wow they add it that early on, didn't realize that. I thought during the pre D.I. era they added the CGI effects after the live action elements were in the internegative/interpostive stage.

Yeah, all these Fall UHDs mean I gotta get anything else I might want now, before my entire weekly budget is spent on new UHDs. Sheesh.

I don't own this movie at all. Probably will have to get it.

I thought the CG bugs were pretty awful looking, but the rest of the movie more than made up for it.

And honestly, this is the best way to do VFX, in my opinion, and it's why I never feel like late 90s CGI is fake. Simple? Yes. Crude? Maybe. But it never feels like it's not in camera, unlike a lot of today's characteristically flat digital films.

There's something very organic about it which makes it blend so well (although nothing can help the Scorpion King at the end of Mummy Returns) but this is where something like HDR redresses the balance somewhat with modern digital toss, I was astonished at how well the CG stuff in Warcraft integrated with the live action, for example.

So unless Sony separately releases a remastered BD I wouldn't think so on this one.
Bummer.

Yeah. This is pissing me off. BB is listing the regular case version for the same price, but they're not taking pre-orders for that.

No, thanks. I'll stick with his Hollywood stuff. I wish he would go back, that would be really interesting: a big budget, R-rated, 2017, Verhoeven SF/action flick.

However, it fits the fascist vibe of the movie itself. The human army was no better than the bugs.

Though not as effective as the sociopolitical satire of Robocop, Verhoeven wanted to show what a European style militaristic dictatorship in space might look like. He was scarred by the effects of WWII and that shows up in a lot of his work.

Yeah that stuff is good too but I don't think he came into his own artistically until his Hollywood residency.

Nice idea and all, but poor execution.

The sets will be the issue not the CGI.

22 bucks on amazon. I'd order it now, but honestly after the fifth element and Resident Evil Vendetta debacles... I'm nervous about amazon for Sony titles.
