Dolby's being polite and trying to downplay a format war. It's nothing like HD DVD since it's the superior format for one, and one pushed by multiple manufacturers. If anything HDR10+ is like HD DVD - pushed by a single manufacturer (Samsung = Toshiba), inferior specs, less software makers, less device types, "royalty free" is the new "region free", and something the industry really doesn't want or need and just confuses average customers.
Not to mention the outright misinformation and FUD.
Where is the Official Dolby Vision Owners thread (no price talk)?
That's the one I'm interested in, for my eyes only, and pure visual pleasure.
And my favorite names play the Dolby Vision game; Oppo, Sony, LG, Panasonic, Vizio, TCL, Essence, Apple, Netflix, iPad and Hisence.

I doubt the average person knows what HDR is, let alone HDR10+, Where as Dolby has been around in one form or another for 52 years. I'm not against HDR10+, I think all players should support all formats, like DanBa says Universal HDR.

They many not specifically know what HDR is but they see it on all the ads and on the 4K TV boxes (even the ones that have DV) so the average consumer would think it is important. Therefore HDR10+ sounds like (and is) and improved version of HDR.

And in the USA they'll only see it on Samsung TVs and...nowhere else.

To counter, if I were in marketing, I’d add somewhere on the bottom of Dolby Vision logo the phrase -
‘based upon 12-bit ICtCp frame HDR renders’, with 12-bit and HDR bolded and in a larger font…..of course, that’s why I could never cut it in marketing….TMI, accurate though it may be.

The marketeers would tell me something like you’d get better messaging if you simply ran a flashy commercial for Dolby Vision (with a lot of hashtags and 'likes') during some upcoming annual Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

b.t.w., for those interested in HLG, I posted this on another thread earlier today -

Ugh do we really need more HDR formats other than HDR10+ and Dolby Vision? Keep it simple!

ATSC 3.0 & HDR formats

Howard Lukk, Director of Standards at SMPTE, forgot to mention SMPTE PQ (i.e. HDR10 without static metadata).

You do if you want any chance at all of seeing the Cubbies, or anyone from the DR, for that matter play against whomever (in major league baseball) this year live in HDR courtesy of AT&T DirecTV, as I previously broke the news here, prior to the echo chamber of the internet picking it up.

Not everything is generated in HDR after the fact by a colorist taking his/her good ol’ time tweaking movie content in a studio or post house setting - http://www.bscexpo.com/seminars/ (Friday and Saturday) when the client is generous with the booked hours.

Wink We will probably never know.

I think we all agree that Dolby does not want any incompatible gear by the end of this year. They probably know the existing capabilities of the various devices as well as that device's manufacture. No way Dolby would allow this if Apple and Oppo in particular could not do FW updates to their devices.

May be they did not inform their partners (looks likely right now, and that is the word on the cyber street). There is the possibility that they are just taking the bullet for the team, and providing cover for their partners.
[Show spoiler] Insert the laughing, chuckling, chortling, guffawing, giggling, tittering, cackling, and at Salty now.

I would also like to know when this “low latency” mode was developed and made available for use.

At this time I am confident that 100% of the consumers who have Dovi capable displays, know that it is HDR.

Make that THE PREMIUM HDR.

Note that the European press release differs slightly from the US one in that it states that the update won’t roll out there until February now. Which isn’t exactly a surprise given the issues surrounding the firmware’s US release.
Why should he be surprised. From his own article on 12/18/17:
Quote:
The update is set to hit the US first, before starting to roll out to sets in Europe at the end of January. Though Sony says it could be well into February before the roll out has been completed.

It's a . . . . . suspense waiting on the sidelines for a paradigm that makes sense.

I still have FW updates turned OFF on my Zed. As do others.
Not sure this partial DoVi update isn't half-baked. Only want to wait and see.

HDR10 looks perfectly great right now. Just need to sit back and watch the dust settle.
