I don't have time to read all the interim posts since my absence but I hope someone here covered the new Sony camera, the Venice.
Later.

P.S.
I've got friends and family on Marco Is. and in Naples....not to mention we still keep a place there (see my old posts).

Quote:
What's the future of Dolby Vision?

Dolby has gone out of its way to dismiss talk of any possible format war, positioning its technology as a ‘value added’ proposition in relation to HDR10, not a direct competitor.

Dolby Vision is essentially extra information applied on top of an HDR10 core, so it’s easy to ensure that all Dolby Vision content is also compatible with devices that only support HDR10.

It’s not mandatory for a content creator to deliver both HDR10 and Dolby Vision support though. US streaming platform VUDU did not initially support HDR10 alongside Dolby Vision, nor did Vizio’s first Dolby Vision TVs.

Both have now added HDR10 support, so there is currently no Dolby Vision platform that doesn’t support both. There's no doubt the current HDR landscape is a little rocky, especially when you throw HLG (the broadcast HDR TV format), HDR10 Plus, and the recently announced Advanced HDR by Technicolor into the equation.

Unfortunately, there's a chance it could only get more confusing as the new formats and standards settle. But fear not - we'll be on hand to help you cut through the jargon.
Yeah I think he just likes to stir the pot to get increase readership by penning a article implying HDR TV format war.

Agree, I think his earlier article (the forbes one) was nothing more than hysterical click-bait. Right from the tone of the opening paragraph.

HDR's promise is stunted by reluctant developer support

We speak to game developers and hardware manufacturers about the emerging color standard.

Video games were already putting way too much money into development and having to pray for mass market appeal when I stopped gaming years ago. Developers would crumble and fall based on one bad bet because the cost to consumer ratio was stupidly irresponsible. Everything I have read says it's only gotten worse in the big-budget sphere, so adding HDR and 4k to the mix sounds like a nightmare. The article makes sense to me.

Awfully quick to judge a man's route to put food on the table eh?

Jonny posted on Twitter earlier this year about the current struggles of writers these days. The pay is getting worse, therefore they need to write more articles for more sites to keep their income the same. He specifically said websites started only offering him 50% ofwhat they normally pay. Hence why he's expanded his website tree for articles.

Dude, I'm not a pro but I've been writing reviews long enough (over 12 years now) to know how pathetic the situation is for online journos in an age when everyone and their granny has a blog/youtube channel/whatever to espouse their views and can become an instant expert ( ). I honestly don't know why I even bother with the reviews as we very rarely get screeners for the big releases (that's just for BD, never mind 4K) and I reach more people with my posts on here than I do over there. But I never got paid before and I sure as hell ain't getting paid now so I might as well keep clattering away on my keyboard.

That doesn't stop What Hifi from being shitkicking buffoons of the highest order, though.

The third demonstration, together with Samsung, will showcase the world’s first live Ultra HD transmission of HDR10+ content via satellite. HDR10+ is Samsung’s new royalty free open standard for High Dynamic Range (HDR), which uses dynamic metadata to offer the best possible HDR effect for every scene by further reducing dimming and saturation in comparison with conventional HDR, which uses static metadata with a constant HDR effect.

“SES is continuously investigating new technologies and working with customers and industry partners on further improving television viewing, aiming to always bring a more immersive experience,” said Thomas Wrede, Vice President, New Technology & Standards, SES Video. “I am looking forward to seeing our visitors experience Luxembourg City via our live VR demo, enjoy the fast moving scenes displayed in High Frame Rate, and discover the brightness levels offered by HDR10+.”

Default The artificial HDR format war

Didn't Think There Was An HDR TV Format War? There Is Now – John Archer
https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarc.../#6ded7c6e14da

Why contribute to create an artificial HDR format war? It won’t bring any benefit to consumers!

Facing inherently incompatible formats like Blu-ray vs HD DVD, consumers have to choose a side.

It is not the case with HDR formats.
Consumers can just require Dolby Vision TV makers or HDR10+ TV makers to just add a piece of HDR software in order to be compatible with the other HDR format. This upgraded TV will remain the same: same panel, same electronic parts, same mechanical parts!
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/465-hi...l#post50302361

For example, the Sony Z9D doesn’t support Dolby Vision at launch.
Quote:
Sony already made the announcement - no Dolby Vision support.
Someone mentioned that Samsung's dynamic metadata HDR10 proposal passed with the competent authorities and perhaps we will see something like a dynamic HDR update on the Z in the future, but this is pure speculation.
Nobody should buy this set expecting a DV upgrade in the future - it simply ain't happening.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lc...l#post46372345

Then, the Sony Z9D will get Dolby Vision with a free software upgrade.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ole...l#post54095697
Thank you, Sony! A real consumer-oriented TV maker!

Universal HDR TV is a big plus for consumers: consumers can watch any existing HDR content they want!
