SGO is putting out a nice set of videos explaining the basics of HDR production called the 101 Guide to HDR:

Richard,

first ad hoc group doc (HDR/WCG) has been uploaded for the upcoming meeting in Geneva. The cycle begins again.

Some members like Geoff have had success with UHD discs with HDR off (converted to SDR). The Samsung player does not allow you to turn it off on a Samsung TV though. That is why I am returning it and getting a player that lets you turn off HDR, like the Oppo. I will post on here how it works out.

Ray is right that the colors are the same, but our lack of proper HDR lighting makes it look dim and drab.

Not sure how things are with the wifey this late in the game, but If I had the choice, I would spend the extra money to upgrade the tv and keep the k8500, rather than spend the extra 350 on a better player and keep the ku6300. (Or if your even within return window).

Btw, a new FW has been issued to help correct the strip metadata feature on the oppo, so experiments can now continue. Any previous experiments should be disregarded.

I've come to peace with the TV because it makes BDs look so amazing and waiting a couple years will probably put OLED Dolby Vision sets into my price range. If the SDR converted UHDs look "meh" then I'll just watch BDs for two more years. It's fine.

From what I know all cables and TVs that can handle 18Gbps can likely be upgraded to HDMI 2.1. Hope others with more information will post.

Take a long good look in the mirror, Velvet and ask yourself the question: do I really want to wait a couple of years? Not to mention buying 1080p discs for movies that are being released in 4K.

You're missing out on all the fun! If you have the resources and Mrs. Velvet's blessing, I would say make the jump this year.

Is this because my T.V was originally 8 bit? Is there a way to fix this? Sorry if I sound dumb, I just spent the last hour researching HDR, so I am new to this whole thing. Any advice would help! Thanks so much!
Thats sounds to me that the player is sending the HDR/2020 signal, the TV is not processing it as HDR but displaying it as regular gamma2.x/709 SDR signal. Is it all ash grey? Check settings like someone mentioned above.

Why does dynamic hdr10 require a whole new HDMI spec. when Dolby Vision metadata can pass through 1.4?

Are TV and audio/video receiver manufacturers really going to allow all these HDMI 2.0a products to be firmware updated to 2.1 or are they going to use this as another excuse to force us to buy yet another round of gear as was probably the plan for the initial HDMI protocol in the first place?

FYI, according to Kris Deering

the 2017 LG OLED's will be the first models that can be cal'd for DV.

Great news, sad it took so long to get it together.

Well I'm more a movie guy than a tech guy, so it doesn't nag at me too much. Also I plan to get a player that lets me turn off HDR soon, and then I'll pretty much have the same experience Geoff does, and he loves it. So we'll see!

"We had anticipated the challenge of getting high dynamic range (HDR) and HDR metadata over HDMI interfaces. So what we did was develop our own technology that tunnels all the way through HDMI interfaces back to version 1.4, including the signaling and the metadata. So for televisions that have HDMI inputs and present Dolby Vision signals, as a requirement from us, the HDMI inputs have to support Dolby Vision in addition to the on-board OTT apps that support Dolby Vision and in order to make that work we developed in-band signaling as well as the ability to send 12-bit video over what is effectively an 8-bit interface. All this is implemented in televisions and storage devices that support Dolby Vision.

The reason for that is not that we want to undermine HDMI, but because we wanted to have a solution that works right away without having to wait for a new HDMI standard. In the meantime, we have been working with the CEA, the industry and SMPTE in refining and standardizing these mechanisms so that they would gradually flow into HDMI. The first piece of evidence was the first SMPTE standards that we standardized (ST 2084) for the signaling for the Electro Optical Transfer Function (EOTF) [method in which digital codes are transformed into visible light] as well as the static mastering metadata have since been adopted into HDMI 2.0a, so that basically, gradually, there will be a standardized way for HDMI to send a signal that we are already sending through our own mechanism for using HDMI."
[Roland Vlaicu, VP of Dolby]
https://hdguru.com/dolby-vision-trie...t-bar-for-hdr/

HDMI 2.0a supports open standard static metadata and PQ transfer function.
HDMI 2.0b supports HLG transfer function.
HDMI 2.1 supports open standard SMPTE ST 2094 dynamic metadata (and 4K HFR 120 fps).

Dynamic HDR format(s) has (have) to be specified by a standardization organization like CTA or DECE.

Just because they do the same thing doesn't mean they're implemented in the same way. Dolby's in-house special sauce (the "in-band signalling" mentioned above) is different from an open standard which needs to be examined and ratified by the various CE power brokers, and you must have noticed that Dolby themselves have a proposal on the table for ST2094? This is because it's separate from whatever they've done with their specific DV metadata implementation, and bear in mind that even the transmission of static HDR10 metadata over HDMI needed a revision to the spec (2.0a) so it follows that dynamic HDR10 will need its own revision.

The new Panasonic GH5 camera will have an option to record in a log format, which will be nice for people who want to master in HDR. But interestingly, it will also record directly to HLG. So I guess we will start seeing a some more HLG content on YouTube. This may be the start of a new trend. I wonder how many more cameras we will see with HLG support?

Panasonic spent a good amount of time on the GH5 camera at today's press conference. I'm very interested in getting this camera for my personal use and maybe becoming a dealer.
