Default Headphones for nighttime HT enjoyment?

I suppose that many of us here don't have the luxury of enjoying our HT setups after 11pm as much as we'd like. I am one of those unfortunate souls.

Having said that, can anyone recommend a good-excellent set of headphones that will simulate the surround-sound experience to an acceptable and enjoyable degree.

Money is certainly a consideration, but I think I'd be willing to spend as much as $500 or even slighlt more.

Your comments/suggestions/links are certainly welcomed.

Well, you can get a heck of a set of headphones for $500, but honestly I think it may be overkill if you only intend to use them for movies. Most of the really high end headphones are made to shine when paired with high quality music sources/dacs/amps.

I own a pair of Sennheiser HD555 which retail for around $150. I can tell you they are great for movies, because they can simulate a pretty wide wide soundstage with their open design. I set my receiver to silent cinema mode and it sounds pretty good. The only knock on the 555's is they are a little weak on bass.

If your looking for something that will really give you good sound do a search for companies like AKG, Beyerdynamic and ofcourse Sennheiser. These ones are pretty well my dream set...

Make sure you pair them with other high quality components to really make them shine.

I'll check my regular audio guy in Burlington to see if I can audition a pair of those. And the AKG's as well, if he carries them.

What about Grado? I've heard a lot of good things about them. And I know them as I have their cartridge on my turntable arm.

I have the shure se210s which are like $150 and I love them. They are earbuds, but they don't really feel like earbuds cuz of the memory foam they have on them. There are other more expensive models that get close to your $500 limit.

grado's are supposed to be have very good, natural sound for music, and may be good for movies as well i don't really know. personally, i can't stand the look of grado headphones.

Bootman,

Thanks for the link. This looks like what I want. But, judging by the inputs this model has it is obvious that it cannot take full advantage of audio that Blu-ray has to offer. Can you comment on that?
