Just came back from it. It was pretty good, but not as good as the first 2 in my opinion. I do feel like this book would be harder to translate into a movie than the others though. With regards to the adaptation, I thought it was fairly faithful, using a lot of dialogue word for word. Some of the changes were notable, but made sense for the most part. I like that they incorporated the Hanging tree song, and used it as part of the rebellion effort. There's a lot of dialogue and not a lot of "action", so I could see some being turned off of it, but overall I thought it laid a good foundation to the conclusion of the franchise. I saw it in Dolby Atmos, and to be honest, I didn't really notice it much. I was expecting a lot more "oomph" but I didn't feel it. The ticket was the same price as the regular one, so no big deal there.

3.5/5

Of course it did because it got a bunch of showtimes for it, whereas most movies only get a couple on Thursday nights.

Saw it last night and enjoyed it, I think I liked this one more than Catching Fire even with the lack of characters that I like (Finnick, Johanna). Added scenes that weren't from the book were done fairly well and a nice addition. That's one thing that I've come to like about this series, they know how to add stuff to the story without making it horrible. Not sure if I'm feeling Julianne Moore as Coin though, I'll have see the movie a couple more times and I might change my mind.

But really, this film was missing three words...
[Show spoiler]I KILL SNOW
. Would it have been that hard to throw into her "conditions"

Overall I'd give it a 4/5.

[Show spoiler]sort of maternal scene in the cafeteria (which I don't even remember reading). Almost makes me sad for her fate in Part 2 because she seems to genuinely care for Katniss in the movie version.

Man, I wish I had stayed for the after credits. I was surprised they didn't do that logo reveal right at the beginning of the credits like in Catching Fire. And because there hasn't been a precedent for after credits in The Hunger Games flicks so far (I actually stayed thru the credits of the first two movies), I didn't feel compelled to stay. But I did honestly feel like I was going to miss out on something by leaving early.

Oh, and was anyone surprised that they actually used a real title card for this movie with the actual logo font? I was stunned. Now it just feels inconsistent. Lol. With Harry Potter you always expected a big budget cloud sequence to spectacularly reveal the Harry Potter title, but for the past two Hunger Games outings they feel like they were just tacked on in black and white as "just a reminder" that you were indeed watching a Hunger Games movie. Couldn't even emboss and color it like one of the propos that played during the film "JOIN THE FIGHT!" (which reminded me of Covergirl and Subway's tie-in with Catching Fire from last year. lol)
I think they're trying something different with each one...

Hunger Games: Title at beginning as part of explaining what the Hunger Games are, also in the middle of the ending credits.

Catching Fire: Cold open, no title or anything. At the end there's the MJ1 logo reveal followed by the title (in the same font as HG's but all caps) and the credits.

MJ1: Brief cold open (no music over the studio logos!), title card in the style of the logos, title card repeated at end, MJ2 logo reveal after credits. This is probably because this is the first time the logo appears in-universe, as the logo for the propos.

Moore did do a really good job as Coin. She's actually more likeable in the movie than in the book to me.

For whatever reason I decided to picture Phylicia Rashad with white/silver streaked hair as Coin when reading the book. I don't think there's really anything there to lead me to that vision, but she worked for the strong womanly characteristics, and strict demeanor, so it just stuck

‘Hunger Games’ Devours $17M To Open Arctic Box Office Weekend

the eastern seaboard’s deep freeze couldn’t keep away those hunger games fanatics determined to pay $17m in tribute to the hunger games: Mockingjay part 1, which began its pummeling of the box office competition thursday night — though with less severity than its predecessors.

Despite a start more sluggish out of the gate than earlier hunger installments, the third rendition of the y.a. Juggernaut remains a social media phenom. The jennifer lawrence series measured relishmix’s biggest internet crater yet for a film: The adaptation collected more than 602 million clicks on youtube, facebook and twitter, the largest tally on record for a movie. By comparison, the original hunger games collected nearly 375 million clicks across the social-media universe, while catching fire did almost 500 million.

The franchise, which has grossed $1.5b worldwide over two pics, has always been a late-night wonder, though this iteration was slightly chilled: Catching fire caught $25.2m in its late-night haul. The hunger games collected $19.7m.

Mockingjay‘s thursday night haul was easily the year’s biggest, the closest being guardians of the galaxy with $11.2m. Despite weather’s havoc (the nfl had to reschedule a weekend game to monday), forecasters put the penultimate film’s weekend estimates at $140m and above, which would make it the biggest opener of an anemic 2014 by at least $40m.

Though lionsgate didn’t have international numbers, the studio estimated thursday totals were up 5% over catching fire. Make sure to check out nancy tartaglione‘s sunday international box office analyses.

More numbers as they roll in…

Box Office Mojo's comments sound less enthusiastic...

Quote:
Forecast: Will 'Mockingjay' Open Over $150 Million This Weekend?

Friday AM Update: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 opened to an estimated $17 million on Thursday night. While that's easily the biggest Thursday night debut of the year so far, it is significantly lower than Catching Fire's $25 million opening on the same weekend last year.

It's also off from the first Hunger Games movie, which took in $19.7 million from midnight-only showings back in 2012. This is a concerning statistic—with showtimes starting at 8 p.m., Mockingjay absolutely should have earned more than this.

Overall, the $17 million debut ranks 13th all-time for Thursday/midnight launches.

If Mockingjay follows Catching Fire's pattern from here, it will end the weekend with $106 million. That would be a stunning drop; for now, let's assume that fans simply decided to wait to see the movie on Friday or Saturday. Even with that assumption, though, this late night debut essentially rules out a $150 million weekend.

Three words: Grain and Hanging Tree. This started off slow, but somewhere around the halfway point, I grew to love it. I think it was the scene when
[Show spoiler]Katniss' song evolved into the score and the rebels stormed the reservoir.
